Pack Athletic Socks

Updated 2026

Pack quality athletic socks. Not many—five to seven pairs max. Proper socks prevent blisters on days you walk 15+ miles. Cotton socks do not. They retain moisture, bunch up, and cause friction.

Why athletic socks matter: They're moisture-wicking, padded in the right places, and maintain shape after washing. Your feet are your primary transportation. Blisters and foot pain affect everything.

What to pack:

  • 5-7 pairs of quality athletic socks
  • 1-2 pairs of lightweight hiking socks (if you'll do serious hiking)
  • 1 pair of wool socks (temperature regulation even when damp)
  • 2-3 pairs of casual socks for non-hiking days

Total: 10-12 pairs max. You'll wash frequently. Having 12 pairs means you can wait a week between laundry if needed.

How to choose:

  • Merino wool or synthetic blends
  • Avoid 100% cotton
  • Padded sole for durability
  • Mid-calf height for support

Break them in before you leave. Wearing brand-new athletic socks for the first time on day one of travel is a recipe for blisters. Wear them at home for a week first.

Good socks are one of the best investments for travel comfort. They cost $3-8 per pair. A blister costs days of painful walking and potential infection. Worth it.
