Answer Capsule
The BootsnAll TripPlanner helps you plan your round-the-world route systematically. Start with regions, add countries, estimate timing and costs, and finalize your itinerary. Planning makes travel organized and less stressful.
Why Use a Trip Planner
Planning your route offers:
- **Structure:** Know your general direction
- **Logistics:** Understand transport needs and visa timing
- **Budget:** Calculate costs and timeline
- **Flexibility:** Plan general flow, adjust as you travel
- **Confidence:** Leave home knowing your direction
Step 1 - Choose Your Regions
Start broad. What continents/regions appeal to you?
- Southeast Asia (beaches, temples, budget)
- South Asia (culture, history, budget)
- East Asia (modern cities, history, varied price)
- Europe (history, culture, expensive)
- Americas (national parks, diverse, expensive)
- Africa (wildlife, culture, varied cost)
- Australasia (remote, unique, expensive)
Most RTWers focus on 2-4 regions for their first RTW trip.
Step 2 - Select Countries
Inside each region, choose countries.
Sample combination:
- **Southeast Asia:** Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia (8 weeks)
- **South Asia:** India (4 weeks)
- **Europe:** Spain, France, Italy (6 weeks)
Total: 18 weeks (4-5 months)
Mix popular and less-touristy countries. Don't try to see everything.
Step 3 - Estimate Time Per Country
How long in each place?
- **First time visiting region:** 2-3 weeks minimum
- **Main destination:** 3-4 weeks
- **Secondary destination:** 1-2 weeks
- **Pass-through:** 3-5 days
Example timeline:
- Thailand: 3 weeks
- Vietnam: 3 weeks
- Cambodia: 2 weeks
- Laos: 2 weeks
- India: 4 weeks
- Turkey: 2 weeks
- Greece: 2 weeks
- Italy: 3 weeks
- Spain: 2 weeks
Total: 24 weeks (6 months)
Step 4 - Calculate Costs
Research daily costs per region:
- Southeast Asia: $15-30/day
- South Asia: $15-30/day
- Turkey/Greece: $40-70/day
- Europe: $80-150/day
Multiply daily cost by weeks:
- 9 weeks Southeast/South Asia @ $25/day: $2,250
- 7 weeks Turkey/Greece/Europe @ $100/day: $7,000
Total: $9,250 (before flights)
Add flights: $2,000-4,000 (international) + $500-1,000 (regional)
Trip cost: ~$12,000-15,000
Step 5 - Plan Your Route
Connect countries logically to minimize backtracking.
Good route: Bangkok > Ho Chi Minh City > Phnom Penh > Vientiane > India > Turkey > Greece > Italy > Spain
Bad route: Bangkok > Spain > Vietnam > Greece > Cambodia (backtracking)
Use maps. Follow logical geography. Avoid expensive flights between distant locations.
Step 6 - Identify Key Flights
Major flights (expensive, book in advance):
- Home > first destination
- Between continents
- Last destination > home
Regional flights (cheaper, book 2-4 weeks ahead):
- Between countries in same region
Overland travel (cheapest):
- Between adjacent countries (buses, trains)
Step 7 - Plan Around Visas
Research visa requirements for each country:
- Visa-free/on-arrival: book as you go
- Advance visa required: plan 2-3 months ahead
- Visa runs: understand staying rules
Example: India visa (requires advance application) - apply before leaving if extending beyond tourist visa.
Step 8 - Finalize Itinerary
Your plan:
- Regions: Southeast Asia, South Asia, Europe
- Countries: 9 countries over 24 weeks
- Budget: ~$15,000 (flights + living)
- Route: logical path, minimal backtracking
- Timing: accounts for seasons, visas, flight bookings
This is your framework. Adjust as needed when traveling.
Flexibility Within Structure
Your plan gives direction, not prescription.
- If you love Thailand, stay longer
- If you hate a country, leave early
- If flight prices are high, adjust dates
- If you meet people, extend your stay
- If you're burned out, take a break
Plans change. That's expected.
Using BootsnAll TripPlanner
BootsnAll offers tools to:
- Map your route visually
- Calculate costs by region
- Track transportation options
- Store accommodation ideas
- Organize research
- Connect with other travelers
Or use: Google Maps, spreadsheets, travel blogs for similar planning.
What NOT to Do
Don't over-plan to the point of anxiety. Having direction is useful; having every day scheduled is stressful.
Don't book everything in advance. Book first 1-2 weeks, then adjust based on reality.
The Bottom Line
Planning your RTW route takes time but provides confidence and structure. Use BootsnAll TripPlanner or similar tools to map regions, estimate costs, and finalize timing. Your plan is a framework, not scripture. Adjust as you travel based on what you discover.
