BootsnAll Scorecard
4.1 / 10
Sochi's coast and mountains would score well in another decade, but in 2026 the war, the visa wall and cash-only travel push safety, value and indie fit to the bottom of the scale, and the trains are the only thing keeping it out of the basement.
- Value
- 3.5
- Near the 2 anchor, because a modest sea-view room runs 6,000 to 8,000 rubles ($72 to $96) a night, a Russian travel blogger found an all-inclusive Sharm el-Sheikh package often cheaper than a week here, and every bill is paid in cash rubles.
- Getting around
- 6
- Above the 5 anchor thanks to the Lastochka trains, 30 pairs a day from Sirius toward Sochi and nine up to Rosa Khutor, plus 48-ruble buses, but apps die when mobile internet is cut and few drivers speak English.
- Crowds and timing
- 4
- Below the 5 anchor, since Russia's domestic holidaymakers pack the pebble beaches all summer, Krasnaya Polyana's lifts close in stages from October 15 and are all shut from November 8 to 30, and Rosaviatsia restricted flights nine times in February 2026 alone.
- Safety and hassle
- 2
- At the 2 anchor, with the UK advising against all travel to Russia, Canada saying avoid all travel, drone strikes that wounded five people in Sochi in September 2026, and a court here jailing an American for five years in January 2026.
- Food and drink
- 6
- A notch above the 5 anchor, because shashlik, khachapuri and Black Sea fruit are everywhere and the Caucasus is next door, but the bootleg chacha that killed at least 10 people in 2025 is a reminder to eat and drink where it's licensed.
- Indie fit
- 3
- Near the 2 anchor, since most Western passports need a consular visa, online tickets at places like Skypark take only Russian bank cards, and you'll pay cash for everything, though the train to the mountains and the city buses work fine on your own.
Editorial scores, 1 to 10, against the same written anchors for every city. Half points allowed. The overall is the plain average of the six.
Overview and Things to Consider
Sochi is a strip, not a city. It runs along the Black Sea from Lazarevskoye in the northwest to the Psou River border with Abkhazia, with 466,078 people at the 2021 census spread across four districts and the separate federal territory of Sirius. Palms line the promenades, the beaches are pebble, and the Caucasus rises straight behind the town. Up a river valley inland sits Krasnaya Polyana, where Russia held the 2014 Winter Olympics' snow events and where three resorts shared one ski pass in the 2025-26 season.
This guide has to start with the part most guides skip. Russia is at war with Ukraine, and Sochi is inside the range of Ukrainian drones. The UK government advises against all travel to Russia and says your insurance could be invalidated if you go. Canada says avoid all travel. Drone debris killed two women in Adler in July 2025, and a September 2026 strike wounded five people, including a child, and closed the beaches. Since 2022 your Visa or Mastercard won't work here, and your embassy may not be able to help if something goes wrong.
So who is this for? Mostly readers with family in Russia, EU citizens who qualify for the e-visa and have weighed the risk, and anyone planning for the day the war ends. You'd love Sochi if you like a place where you can swim in the morning and stand at 2,320 meters by afternoon, and if Soviet sanatorium architecture interests you more than beach clubs. You'd hate it if you need predictable flights, card payments, working apps or English. Russians themselves are wavering. Tour operator Intourist saw interest in Sochi trips fall 30 percent year on year in February 2026.
What's overrated? The Olympic Park, on most days. It's a vast, tidy legacy campus of arenas, a stadium and a fountain, best for an evening walk, and Formula One is gone. The beaches are too. They're pebble, crowded in summer and closed by the mayor when drones threaten the coast.
How Sochi Got Here
Before it was a Russian resort, this coast was Circassian. In June 1861 Circassian leaders met in Sochi to form a parliament and appeal to Britain and the Ottoman Empire for recognition, and Russian troops broke it up. The Russo-Circassian War ended in May 1864 at Qbaada, the meadow that became Krasnaya Polyana, and the Russian army then expelled the remaining population through Black Sea ports. Historians estimate 1 to 1.5 million Circassians were killed or driven out, 95 to 97 percent of the people. Knowing this changes how the Olympic venues read.
The Russian town began as Fort Alexandria in 1838. Stalin turned the coast into the Soviet Union's showpiece health resort, lining it with neoclassical buildings, and kept a favorite dacha in the hills, where his study and a wax figure are now on show. Then came the money. Russia spent about $51 billion on the 2014 Winter Olympics, building a coastal park on the Imereti lowland and a mountain cluster at Krasnaya Polyana, and Sochi went on to host Formula One from 2014 to 2021 and matches at the 2018 World Cup. The Grand Prix contract was terminated after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Getting There and Around
Sochi International Airport (AER) is in Adler, at the southern end of the strip, and it's how nearly everyone arrives. It handled 12.5 million passengers in 2025, including a record 1.8 million on international routes, with links to Istanbul, Dubai, Antalya, Yerevan, Tashkent and Belgrade among them. A railway station sits next to the terminal, joined by a walkway bridge, but buses are the everyday link. The 105 and 124 go to the central bus and train station, the 51 to Adler market, and the 135 up to Krasnaya Polyana.
Plan for the airport to close without warning. Russia's aviation authority restricted flights at Sochi eight times in January 2026 and nine times in February, and on October 3, 2026, restrictions were imposed and lifted at Sochi, Krasnodar and Gelendzhik airports again and again through the day, with Sochi closing once more at 11:18pm. Keep a free night in your plans at both ends, don't book a tight onward connection, and pick hotels that will move your dates. The Krasnaya Polyana resort publishes flight-cancellation guarantees for exactly this reason.
Entry is the real obstacle. US, UK, Canadian and Australian citizens can't get Russia's e-visa and need a full consular visa, and UK applicants must give fingerprints at a visa center in London, Manchester or Edinburgh. Citizens of all EU states, Switzerland, Norway, Japan, Turkey and a few dozen others can use the unified e-visa, which since August 23, 2025, has been valid for 120 days from issue with stays of up to 30 days. It takes four calendar days to process, and it only works at listed crossings, which include Sochi airport and the Sochi seaport but not the Psou land border with Abkhazia. Your passport needs six months' validity beyond the visa, and you must be registered within seven working days of arrival, which hotels do for you.
Getting around runs on buses and Lastochka trains. Since October 1, 2025, a city bus ride costs a flat 48 rubles ($0.58), while suburban routes charge by distance at 4.47 rubles a kilometer. The Lastochka electric trains are the best way along the coast and into the mountains, with 30 pairs a day from Sirius toward Sochi and nine to Rosa Khutor as of January 2026. Taxis rarely use meters and drivers rarely speak English. Yandex Go is the ride-hailing app, and it lets you pay the driver in cash, which matters because your foreign card won't work. The catch is that it needs mobile data, and Sochi's mobile internet is often switched off overnight during drone alerts.
What's Changed Since 2016
February 2014 to 2022: Sochi got its Olympics and lost its global audience. The Games cost about $51 billion and left a coastal Olympic Park and a ski area at Krasnaya Polyana. Formula One raced here from 2014 to 2021, and the contract was terminated after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The same year Visa and Mastercard pulled out, which is why foreign cards stopped working.
July 2025 to October 2026: the war arrived. Ukrainian drone debris killed two women and injured 11 people in Adler in July 2025, near the Olympic Park and the airport. By October 2025 locals told AFP that mobile internet went off most nights from about 10 or 11pm until 7am, and that temporary airport closures had become common. In the first two months of 2026 overall tourist interest in Sochi fell 9 percent, and on September 14, 2026, five people including a child were wounded and the mayor closed the beaches.
August 23, 2025: Russia's unified e-visa got longer. It's now valid for 120 days with stays of up to 30, up from 60 days and 16, though the eligible list still leaves out the US, UK, Canada and Australia.
November 2025: the Trabzon ferry never happened. After launch dates in January, June, July and October 2025, a ship finally reached Sochi from Turkey in November, sat offshore for more than 48 hours without permission to dock, and went back. No sailing was ever completed, and the operator's director was arrested over the alleged diversion of 22 million rubles.
December 2025 and January 2026: the mountains got easier to use. Extra Lastochka trains between the Imeretinsky resort and Rosa Khutor started on December 20, 2025, and more than 43,000 people had ridden them by late January, about 3.5 times as many as a year earlier. From January 2, 2026, one ski pass covered Rosa Khutor, Gazprom Polyana and the Krasnaya Polyana resort, 174 kilometers of runs on 64 lifts. By 2026 the Krasnaya Polyana resort, which sits inside Sochi National Park, also charged a separate 300-ruble park day ticket.
What the Usual Advice Gets Wrong
"Russia has an easy e-visa now, so Sochi is a simple add-on." Only citizens of 64 listed countries qualify, and the US, UK, Canada and Australia aren't among them. Even with an e-visa you must enter and leave through a listed checkpoint. Sochi airport and the seaport qualify, the Psou border with Abkhazia doesn't.
"Take the fast ferry from Trabzon in Turkey." Older guides still list it, but the Trabzon-Sochi line never completed a single sailing. The one ship that showed up in November 2025 turned back after two days offshore without permission to enter port.
"Bring your cards, everything takes Visa and Mastercard." Not since 2022. Cards issued outside Russia don't work, and the UK and Canadian governments both say you may not be able to access your money. Carry enough US dollars or euros in cash for the whole trip, and bring your passport to change them.
"If Sochi airport closes, fly into Sukhum in Abkhazia and cross over." The Krasnaya Polyana resort suggests this to Russian guests, but it means leaving Russia and coming back, so you'd need a double- or multiple-entry visa, and the Psou crossing isn't on the e-visa list. Georgia treats entering Abkhazia from Russia as a criminal offense, which can follow you on any later trip to Tbilisi.
"Sochi is the cheap Russian Riviera." Not anymore. A modest sea-view hotel room runs 6,000 to 8,000 rubles a night, and a Russian travel blogger who compared the two in September 2025 found that a package to Sharm el-Sheikh with flights, all-inclusive hotel and transfers often came out cheaper than a week in Sochi.
"Buy homemade chacha at the market, it's the local souvenir." In August 2025 two women were charged after homemade chacha sold at a market south of Sochi killed at least 10 people. Buy spirits from licensed shops and restaurants only.
Ideas to Consider for Your Visit
Have you thought about skipping the beach and riding straight up to the mountains? The Lastochka from Sirius runs nine pairs of trains a day to Rosa Khutor, and the 135 bus from Adler climbs the same valley. In summer the Krasnaya Polyana resort sells a Panorama walking ticket for 2,950 rubles for its lifts and viewpoints, and the resort sits inside Sochi National Park, so add the park's 300-ruble day ticket, paid once a day and valid across the resort, Polikarya waterfall included.
Rosa Khutor tops out at 2,320 meters, with a 1,380-meter vertical drop down to the stadium where the Olympic alpine races finished, and 63 trails on 18 lifts of its own. The bigger story is the joint ski pass that started on January 2, 2026, linking Rosa Khutor, Gazprom Polyana and the Krasnaya Polyana resort, 125 runs on 64 lifts. Officials said availability would be updated daily to match the weather, so check what's open before you pay.
In Khosta, between central Sochi and Adler, the hills hold most of what's worth seeing on the coast. The Agura canyon walk passes a cascade of three waterfalls under high cliffs, and Wikivoyage calls it the oldest tourist sight in the city. Above it, Mount Akhun's tower at about 700 meters gives the best view of the whole strip. Nearby, the yew and boxwood grove is an exclave of the Caucasian Biosphere Reserve, reached by marshrutka 122 to the Khosta-most stop. Stalin's dacha is at Kurortny Prospekt 120 in Khosta district, with his study and a waxwork of the man himself.
Over the Akhshtyr gorge, Skypark runs a pedestrian bridge between the cliffs, with viewing platforms and a zipline back for 3,800 rubles more. Entry with the bridge walk is 2,500 rubles, 10 percent less online if you have a Russian bank card, and the ticket desk is open 10am to 5:15pm. If you want the adrenaline, the bungee from 207 meters costs 30,000 rubles and the SochiSwing 11,000. It's the one Sochi sight that looks as dramatic in person as in the photos.
Eat what the Caucasus eats. Shashlik, khachapuri and fruit from the hills are the everyday food, and the coast's cafes cook them better than anything they try from Europe. In Adler, the trout farm at Forelevaya 45 raises fish in 131 ponds and sells smoked trout. Tea has been grown around Sochi since 1887, the world's northernmost by Wikivoyage's account, and tea houses at Uch-Dere serve it from a samovar. Drink wine and brandy from licensed places only.
Walk central Sochi's old resort spine in the evening. Kurortny Prospekt links the arboretum at number 74, with its cable car and trees from around the world, to the art museum in a 1936 building at number 51, and on to Riviera Park, opened in 1898, where cosmonauts and astronauts planted trees along Friendship Alley. If you do go to the Olympic Park, make it after dark, when the fountain in the basin at its center is the main event.
The Part Most Guides Miss
The best thing about Sochi isn't the sea or the Olympics. It's the Lastochka line that ties them together. The same suburban trains that run along the coast past Khosta, Adler and the airport swing inland at Sirius and climb into the mountains to Rosa Khutor, 30 pairs a day from Sirius toward Sochi and nine up the mountain as of January 2026. That makes a car-free trip from palm trees to a 2,320-meter summit possible on public transport. Few seaside cities anywhere have a ski resort on their commuter railway.
Where to Base Yourself
Central Sochi. For a first trip and for walking. Kurortny Prospekt, Navaginskaya street, the seaport, Riviera Park and the arboretum are all on foot, the main train and bus stations are here, and Wikivoyage counts it, with Adler, among the pricier places to stay. The catch is the distance to everything else, since the airport and the mountain trains are a long bus or Lastochka ride south.
Adler and Sirius. Best if you'll spend days in the mountains or have an early flight. The airport, the Olympic Park and the Lastochka junction for Rosa Khutor are all here. The catch is that drones aimed at the airport and its fuel depots end up here too. Debris from one killed two women on Aviatsionnaya street in July 2025, and parts landed on an oil depot near the airport.
Krasnaya Polyana and Rosa Khutor. The base for skiers in winter and hikers in summer, with lift-side hotels from Ibis Styles to Marriott at Polyana 540 and 960. The catch is cost, the extra 300-ruble national park ticket, and the autumn gap, since the resort's lifts close in stages from October 15 and don't reopen until November 7 or December 1.
Khosta. The middle option, with Mount Akhun, the Agura canyon and Stalin's dacha close by, and suburban trains both ways. It's quieter and less polished than the center, and in summer you'll still share the pebbles.
Realities to Be Aware Of
Money first, and it's cash. Foreign-issued cards don't work, so bring US dollars or euros and change them at banks with your passport and the immigration card you get on arrival, which the UK government says you'll need to show to exchange money. The Bank of Russia rate on October 3, 2026, was 83.48 rubles to the dollar. Rooms are what eat the budget. A modest sea-view room runs 6,000 to 8,000 rubles ($72 to $96) a night, so budget travelers should count on about 8,000 to 10,000 rubles ($96 to $120) a day with buses at 48 rubles and cafe meals, mid-range on 15,000 to 25,000 rubles ($180 to $300) once you add lift tickets and Skypark, and comfortable well above that.
Safety is the reason most readers shouldn't go now. The UK says Russian authorities may detain, investigate or prosecute foreigners they suspect of acting against Russian law, even for things done outside Russia, and that detention can mean months or years in prison. In January 2026 a Sochi court sentenced an American to five years after a rifle was found aboard his yacht. Canada warns that Russia doesn't recognize dual citizenship, so dual nationals may get no consular access and could face conscription. Since January 2024 Russian law has treated LGBT advocacy groups as extremist, and Canada warns that anything seen to break that law can lead to arrest, a fine, jail and deportation.
Drones are a daily fact here. When the sirens sound, officials tell people to get indoors into a room without windows, report drones to 112 and keep away from debris. Don't film or post air defenses at work, which officials tell people not to publish. Mobile internet is cut often, usually overnight, and the Canadian government says foreign SIM cards are blocked for at least 24 hours on arrival, while a local SIM takes biometrics and paperwork that can last days. Download offline maps and train times before you need them.
Crowds come from inside Russia. Sochi is the country's leading domestic destination by tour sales, and experts quoted by Kommersant said only about 15 percent of visitors arrive by car, against more than half in nearby Anapa, so when the airport stops, the whole place feels it. Summer means full pebble beaches, and prices climb in summer and again in early May. Outside the big hotels you'll find little English, and Wikivoyage warns you'll hardly find an English-speaking taxi driver, so keep a translation app working offline.

Dollar figures use the [Bank of Russia](https://www.cbr.ru/eng/currency_base/daily/) rate of 83.48 rubles to US$1 set for October 3, 2026. Foreign cards don't work, so every price here is paid in cash rubles.
If Sochi Is Part of a Longer Trip
Inside Russia, Sochi is the end of the line. Trains take 25 to 28 hours from Moscow and 40 to 49 hours from Saint Petersburg, by Wikivoyage's count. Flying is faster but exposed to the same airspace closures as the rest of southern Russia, and the cheapest Aeroflot weekend return from Moscow was 26,200 rubles in February 2026, with summer fares at similar levels. If you have an e-visa, plan entry and exit through listed checkpoints only, since the 30-day clock and the list are both strict.
Abroad, the realistic gateways are Istanbul, Dubai, Antalya and Yerevan in Armenia, all with flights to AER, which makes Sochi a detour off a Europe or Middle East route rather than a stop on one. Don't plan to go overland to Georgia. The Enguri crossing from Abkhazia into Georgia has been closed since 2020, and Georgia treats entry to Abkhazia from the Russian side as a crime. To reach Tbilisi, fly via Istanbul or Yerevan and keep the Russian and Georgian legs on separate tickets.
Yearly Things to Consider
Two calendars run here. On the coast, the swimming season lasts from late May to the end of October, July and August highs reach 82°F to 84°F (28°C to 29°C), and Wikivoyage picks September and October as the best months, with fewer visitors and warm water. Up the valley, skiing depends on snow, and at the Krasnaya Polyana resort the lifts close in stages for maintenance from October 15 and reopen on November 7 or December 1.
The counterintuitive part is the rain. Sochi is wettest in winter, not summer, with about 7 inches in each of October, December and January, against 3.7 in June. So the coast's dry months are the crowded ones, and the quiet months are damp and cool at 50°F (10°C), which suits the mountains better than the beach. A winter trip here is a ski trip with a seafront attached, not the other way around.
Sochi month by month
| Month | Temp | Rainfall | Season | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 50°F (10°C) | 7.0 in | Shoulder | Wet on the coast, peak ski season in the mountains. New Year is busy. |
| February | 51°F (10°C) | 5.3 in | High | Ski season in the mountains. Airport restrictions hit nine times in Feb 2026. |
| March | 55°F (13°C) | 5.2 in | Shoulder | Wet and mild on the coast. Snow in the mountains. |
| April | 63°F (17°C) | 4.3 in | Low | Between seasons. The sea is still too cold for most swimmers. |
| May | 70°F (21°C) | 4.2 in | Shoulder | May holidays fill hotels. Swimming starts late in the month. |
| June | 78°F (25°C) | 3.7 in | High | Driest month. Beaches fill as school holidays begin. |
| July | 82°F (28°C) | 4.7 in | High | Peak domestic crowds on the pebbles. |
| August | 84°F (29°C) | 4.2 in | High | Hottest month and the most expensive rooms. |
| September | 77°F (25°C) | 5.5 in | Shoulder | Velvet season, warm water and fewer families. |
| October | 69°F (21°C) | 7.0 in | Shoulder | Last swims. Mountain lifts start closing on October 15. |
| November | 60°F (16°C) | 6.9 in | Low | Wet and quiet. Most Krasnaya Polyana lifts shut for maintenance. |
| December | 54°F (12°C) | 7.0 in | Shoulder | Krasnaya Polyana lifts reopen December 1, snow permitting. |
Ideas for Itineraries
3 Days in Sochi
Day one, take the Lastochka or the 105 bus from the airport to central Sochi and walk Kurortny Prospekt from Riviera Park past the art museum to the arboretum, ending at the seaport around sunset. Day two, ride a bus to Khosta for the Agura canyon walk and the tower on Mount Akhun, and stop at Stalin's dacha on the way back. Day three, go south to Sirius, take the Lastochka to Rosa Khutor and buy the Panorama walking ticket, then come down for the Olympic Park fountain after dark.
5 Days in Sochi
Do the three days above, then move your base up to Krasnaya Polyana for two nights. Spend day four walking inside the national park to the Polikarya waterfall or the ridges, with the 300-ruble park ticket, and day five on Skypark and its bridge over the Akhshtyr gorge on the way back down. Keep the last evening free in case your flight moves, which in 2026 it may.
1 Week in Sochi
A week lets you treat the strip as two trips. Spend three nights in central Sochi or Khosta for the town, the arboretum, the waterfalls and a tea-house afternoon at Uch-Dere, then three in Krasnaya Polyana for hiking in summer or the joint ski pass in winter. Use the seventh day as a buffer for airport closures, rather than for anything you'd be upset to miss.
2 Weeks or More in Sochi
Two weeks is a long time to be exposed to the risks covered above, and most readers shouldn't plan it in 2026. If you have family here or a reason to stay, settle in Khosta or central Sochi, where buses and trains run both ways, and keep the mountains for weekends. Expect working days to be shaped by overnight internet cuts, keep cash for the whole stay, and make sure your hotel has registered you within seven working days.

Sochi Travel FAQ
Of the sea, the mountains and the town, yes. Don't film or post anything showing air-defense systems at work, which officials tell people not to publish, and stay away from drone wreckage. The UK warns that publishing images of drone attacks or their aftermath can bring heavy sentences. Military and infrastructure sites are a bad idea to photograph anywhere in Russia right now, given how readily the authorities detain foreigners.
In some ways it's riskier. Russia doesn't recognize dual citizenship, so if you enter on a Russian passport you're treated only as Russian, your other country's embassy may not be allowed to help, and Canada warns that dual nationals may be called up for military service. Talk to your government's consular service before you book.
In October, partly. The Krasnaya Polyana resort closes its lifts in stages for maintenance in 2026, three of them from October 15 to November 6 and the rest from November 1 or 8 to November 30, reopening on December 1, so mid-November is for walking in the village only. Its early sale of 2026-27 season passes runs to November 30, at 52,500 rubles for an adult, which tells you when the operators expect the real season to start.
Restrictions can come and go all day and stack up into the night, as they did on October 3, 2026. Get the cancellation stamped at the check-in desk or keep the airline's message, because the Krasnaya Polyana resort's hotels will hold or refund your booking on that proof. Keep enough cash for an extra night, since you can't put it on a foreign card.
Not as a regular passenger in 2026. The Trabzon ferry never ran. The seaport's cruise terminal is on the e-visa list, and Wikivoyage says cruise and ferry passengers can in principle stay up to 72 hours visa-free, but there's no scheduled international service to use it.
Yes, directly. The mayor closes beaches when drones threaten the coast, as he did after the September 14, 2026, attack. If sirens sound while you're on the pebbles, leave the beach and get indoors, away from windows.
