Piran: a Step Back in Time – Slovenia

Piran – a Step Back in Time

Slovenia Travel Stories

In September 2005 we arrived in Ljubljana by train from Salzburg (a great way to travel into Slovenia) and spent a couple of days exploring the Slovenian capital. Ljubljana is a very interesting city with the historic castle providing great views, a lovely old town and plenty of restaurants, plus friendly people. A lot of parks and leafy trees add to the ambience of the city. We stayed at the Domina Grand (negotiated a great deal) which although a little way from the centre, provides shuttle cars for guests, and is a really modern hotel.

The highlight was a trip to Piran. Using the regular bus service had us meandering through many of the lovely towns and villages down to the coast. Piran is a small village with preserved Venetian style historic buildings and lots of alley ways similar to Venice. We stayed at Hotel Max which is a delightful B&B and spent three days exploring, swimming, eating and drinking and generally relaxing in a wonderful atmosphere. Piran has been fortunate in avoiding any “development” and is a forever preserved step back in time but still providing great comforts for the modern traveller.

We regrettably left Piran, again by bus to Ljubljana for one more night before the hotel provided a shuttle car along the super highway to the airport which is framed by snow-capped mountains.

There is much more still left to visit in Slovenia and we look forward to a longer return visit in the near future.
