Travelogue from Conor Purcell's trip to the Middle East to see the situation for himself following Israel's withdrawal from south Lebanon in May.

Following Israel’s withdrawal from South Lebanon in May, Conor Purcell, a second year journalism student in Griffith College, Dublin, went to the Middle East to see the situation for himself.

Here’s what he found…

Follow the Trip

June 7th: Beirut

Beirut illustrates the divisions that still rack Lebanon. Religious fundamentalism side by side with naked consumerism.

June 8th: Sabra Refugee Camp, Beirut

The Palestinian refugees here live in absolute squalor, but despite the tragedies that have befallen them, some of the people here have not given up hope.

June 9th: Fatima Gate, Kfar Kila, South Lebanon

The crack of the bullets is deafening. There is a lot of screaming and shouting. Chaos. A Palestinian boy has just been shot by the Israeli army on the other side of the border fence.

June 10th: Irish UN Outpost, Brashit, South Lebanon

Visiting one of the most exposed outposts of the UN in Lebanon and then on to the Irish UN forces HQ at Camp Shamrock. Then, across the Allenby Bridge and on to Tel Aviv.

June 28th: Kibbutz Degania Bet

The best way to describe a Kibbutz is relaxed. You are shut off from the outside world and it’s a great place to recharge the batteries. Then on to Jerusalem.

July 29th: Matkesh Ramon and home

This is the other side to the Middle East. A side that has nothing to do with religion or conflict. The scenery in this part of the world is the main reason that the Middle East should be on everyone’s must see list.
