BootsnAll Scorecard
6.5 / 10
Jodhpur is cheap, compact around one fort and easy to run on your own, and it loses points on weather and hassle, because the heat closes half the year and the old city's touts and copycat shops work harder than in most of Rajasthan.
- Value
- 8
- At the 8 anchor, since Hostelworld lists dorm beds from US$1.59 to $8.74, the daily intercity from Jaipur costs ₹150 in second class, and the best museum in Rajasthan charges foreigners ₹800, about $8.30.
- Getting around
- 5.5
- Just above the 5 anchor, because the old city is walkable and Uber works outside it, but there's no metro, rickshaws don't use meters, and only Osian and Falna on the day-trip list are reachable by train.
- Crowds and timing
- 5
- Right at 5, with average highs of 101°F (38°C) in April and 106°F (41°C) in May ruling out a third of the year, while October to February brings festivals, weddings and full heritage hotels.
- Safety and hassle
- 6
- A little above the 5 anchor, since the risks are petty, but rickshaw drivers steer you to commission shops, look-alike omelette stalls trade on a famous name, and the UK warns of harassment of women and of food and drinks spiked by strangers.
- Food and drink
- 7.5
- Between 5 and 8, closer to 8, since mirchi bada, pyaaz kachori and makhaniya lassi are cheap, everywhere and the city's pride, though the menu is narrow and mostly vegetarian and sit-down meals in the old city lean tourist.
- Indie fit
- 7
- Family-run havelis, a desert park you can walk alone and a train to Osian's temples reward independent travel, but the Bishnoi villages and dunes mean hiring a car or joining a tour, which keeps it short of 8.

Overview and Things to Consider
Jodhpur is Rajasthan's second city, about 1.6 million people at the edge of the Thar Desert, and it's built around one rock. Mehrangarh sits on a hill about 400 feet (122 meters) above the plain, and the walled old city wraps around its base. From the ramparts you look down on Brahmpuri, the north side of town, where most houses are painted blue. That view is the postcard. The street-level version is narrower, louder and full of motorbikes, cows and snack stalls frying mirchi bada.
You'll love Jodhpur if you want one great fort done properly, a few days of walking a working old city, and food that costs almost nothing. It suits people who like to sit on a rooftop at sunset and do very little. You'll hate it if you need sidewalks, quiet or a meter in your rickshaw, or if you're coming between April and June, when the average high runs 101°F to 106°F (38°C to 41°C) and the city hit 119.8°F (48.8°C) on May 20, 2016.
The 2026 moment is about access. The Indian Air Force runway closed to airlines from March 28 to April 27 for repairs, and a new terminal built to handle two million passengers a year opened on July 4. On the rails, the Vande Bharat from Delhi and Jaipur, launched in September 2025, went to 20 coaches in May 2026 because it kept selling out. The old city hasn't caught up, and that's mostly a good thing.
What's overrated is the idea that the blue is everywhere. It isn't. It's concentrated in Brahmpuri and best seen from above. Umaid Bhawan Palace also gets more attention than it deserves for a visitor, since most of it is a Taj hotel and the royal family's home, and the public gets a small museum.
How Jodhpur Got Here
The Rathore clan ruled from Mandore, 9 km north, until Rao Jodha decided the thousand-year-old fort there was too exposed. He laid the foundation of a new one on a rocky hill on May 12, 1459, and named the city after himself. It sat on the trade road between Delhi and Gujarat, and caravans carrying opium, copper, silk, sandalwood and dates paid for it. Marwar became a Mughal vassal after 1581, was seized by Aurangzeb around 1679, and was won back after a 30-year Rathore rebellion led by Durgadas Rathore. You'll see the fights in the fort itself. Jai Pol, the main gate, celebrates Maharaja Man Singh's 1806 victories over the Jaipur and Bikaner armies, and cannonball marks left by Jaipur's guns are still on the second gate.
Under the British, Jodhpur State was the largest in Rajputana, 93,424 square km, and its traders, the Marwaris, spread across India and came to dominate commerce. Two later rulers left the city its modern shape. Umaid Singh started Umaid Bhawan in 1929 as famine relief, employing 2,000 to 3,000 people until 1943, and in 1931 he opened the first flying club in any princely state on the airstrip that became today's airport. Hanwant Singh signed the accession to India on August 11, 1947, and Jodhpur joined the new state of Rajasthan on March 30, 1949.
The desert is part of the story too. In September 1730, 363 Bishnoi villagers at Khejarli were killed hugging khejri trees that Maharaja Abhai Singh's men had come to cut for a palace, led by a woman named Amrita Devi. The order was withdrawn, the massacre is remembered as a forerunner of India's Chipko tree-hugging movement, and it's the story behind the Bishnoi village visits that guesthouses arrange today.
Getting There and Around
From Jaipur, take the train. There are no flights between the two cities, the drive takes about six hours, and the rail line covers 312 km in four to five. The fastest service is the 26482 Vande Bharat, which leaves Jaipur Junction at 19:05 every day except Tuesday and reaches Jodhpur at 23:20; eRail lists ₹1,102 in chair car and ₹1,938 in executive. The cheap way is the daily 22977 Jaipur-Jodhpur Express, 06:00 to 11:10, at ₹150 in reserved second class or ₹525 in AC chair car. The Ranthambore Express leaves at 16:50 and arrives at 21:40, with sleeper berths at ₹255, and the overnight Mandore Express gets in at 07:30. Going the other way, the Vande Bharat leaves Jodhpur at 05:30 and stops in Jaipur around 09:30 on its way to Delhi Cantonment.
Jodhpur Airport (JDH) is a domestic civil enclave on an Air Force base, about 5 km from the center. Air India and Air India Express fly from Delhi and Mumbai, and IndiGo adds Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Noida. All flights now use the new terminal, which has 20 check-in counters and six aerobridges. Uber covers airport pickups. If you're flying in from abroad, you'll clear immigration in Delhi, Mumbai or Jaipur first, since Jodhpur has no international service and isn't on the e-Visa entry list.
US, UK, Canadian, Australian and EU passport holders all need a visa, and the e-Visa portal is the route nearly everyone uses. The official fee table charges US$25 for a 30-day e-Tourist visa from July to March and US$10 from April to June, US$40 for one year, and for five years US$160 for Americans, US$484 for Britons and US$200 for the others, plus a 3% bank charge. You file an online e-Arrival card within 72 hours before landing, and as of October 2026 the UK says India also wants an Ebola health self-declaration on the Air Suvidha portal, filed in the 24 hours before you land.
Inside the city, your feet and auto-rickshaws do most of the work. Rickshaws don't run on meters, so agree on the price before you get in. Uber runs cars and bike taxis, but Wikivoyage notes ride-hailing doesn't operate in the old town itself. From the Clock Tower you can walk up to the fort, and the Rao Jodha park trails start from a visitor center 800 meters from the main fort gate. A day of sights is easy on foot; Mandore and Umaid Bhawan need wheels.
What's Changed Since 2016
The trains got fast. The Jodhpur-Sabarmati Vande Bharat started on July 7, 2023, putting Ahmedabad six hours away, and the Jodhpur-Delhi Cantonment Vande Bharat followed on September 25, 2025, running via Jaipur in eight hours. In May 2026 Indian Railways swapped its 8-coach set for a 20-coach one because of demand.
The airport closed and reopened bigger. From March 28 to April 27, 2026, the Air Force shut the runway for repairs after years of waterlogging and crumbling surface, grounding about 10 daily flights. Then on July 4, 2026, a 23,342 square meter terminal opened next to the old one, designed by STHAPATI with jharokhas and scalloped arches, and raised capacity from roughly 400,000 passengers a year to two million. Air India moved in on July 12. More routes are the obvious next step.
Mehrangarh costs more. Older guides, Wikivoyage included, list ₹600 for foreigners with the audio guide thrown in. The Mehrangarh Museum Trust's price list in October 2026 is ₹800 for international visitors, ₹500 for foreign students and ₹200 for Indians. The audio guide is still included for international visitors (Indians pay ₹180), and the elevator is ₹50 each way. Jaswant Thada is ₹100 for foreigners.
The stepwell got a café. Toorji ka Jhalra, the 1740 stepwell below the fort, became the backdrop for RAAS Hotels' three-level Stepwell Café, reported in October 2025, with a rooftop lounge facing Mehrangarh. That same month the first Jodhpur Arts Week ran from October 1 to 7. The fort's music calendar now runs from the folk festival in October to the Sacred Spirit Festival, held on February 13 to 15 in 2026.
Arrival paperwork grew. As of October 2026, flying into India means an e-Visa, an online e-Arrival card filed within 72 hours of landing, and an Ebola health self-declaration on the Air Suvidha portal in the 24 hours before landing, required of every international passenger. None of it is hard, but miss the health form and the UK says to expect delays at immigration. Do it before you leave for the airport.
What the Usual Advice Gets Wrong
"Fly from Jaipur to Jodhpur to save time." There's no direct flight. The Vande Bharat does Jaipur to Jodhpur in 4 hours 15 minutes for ₹1,102, and the morning intercity costs ₹150 in second class. Rail is also the easiest way out to Jaisalmer, with seven trains a day and an eighth on Saturdays.
"Mehrangarh is ₹600 for foreigners, audio guide included." That's the old price. In October 2026 it's ₹800 for foreign adults, still with the audio guide included, and the elevator is ₹50 each way. Take the audio guide, it's the best part of the ticket, and arrive at the 9am opening.
"The whole city is blue." The blue is mostly in Brahmpuri, the old quarter on the fort's north side, named for the Brahmin families who live there. Most of Jodhpur is sandstone beige and concrete. See it from the ramparts first, then walk down into it.
"Ask your rickshaw driver for the original lassi shop or the famous omelette stall." The famous names have copies. Wikivoyage reports several stalls near the Clock Tower claiming to be the original Omelette Shop since a guidebook listed one, and warns that drivers push you into shops that pay them. Shri Mishrilal is inside the Clock Tower market; walk there yourself.
"Go in the off season for empty sights and cheap rooms." April to June is a heat warning. May averages 106°F (41°C), and the monsoon in July and August brings humidity but little relief. The useful shoulder is late February to mid-March or the second half of September.
Ideas to Consider for Your Visit
Have you thought about spending a whole morning at Mehrangarh instead of the usual two hours? The museum's painting, textile and arms galleries are run by the Mehrangarh Museum Trust, and they're better than anything in Jaipur's City Palace. Arrive at 9am, take the audio guide that comes with the foreigner ticket, and walk out through Jai Pol to Jaswant Thada, the marble cenotaph completed in 1906 a short walk away, often called the Taj Mahal of Marwar. Lunch at one of the fort's cafés, then go back into town in the afternoon heat.
The best walk in Jodhpur is inside the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park, 70 hectares of restored desert below the fort's walls. Four marked trails of 880 to 1,115 meters cross volcanic rock 680 to 745 million years old, declared a national geological monument, and the park counts more than 200 bird species. Entry is ₹100, a naturalist costs ₹200, and from October to March it opens at 8am. Go early, before the rock heats up.
Eat your way from the Clock Tower to Nai Sarak. Start with a makhaniya lassi, thick with butter and cardamom, at Shri Mishrilal inside the Clock Tower market, then find mirchi bada (a big green chili stuffed with spiced potato and fried in batter) at Raju Namkeens in Manak Chowk and pyaaz kachori at Shahi Samosa, just before the main gate of Sardar Market. Mawa kachori, a sweet version filled with milk solids, is the other local signature, at Janta Sweets or Pokar Sweets on Nai Sarak. For a sit-down Rajasthani thali, locals send people to Gypsy in Sardarpura, upstairs. The omelette stalls by the gate are fine; just don't pay a premium for the word original.
Osian makes the easiest day out, 69 km north, with a cluster of Hindu and Jain temples from the 8th to 12th centuries, including the Sachiya Mata temple and the Mahavira Jain temple. The 20492 Superfast leaves Jodhpur at 06:10 and reaches Osiyan station at 07:16, and the 20491 brings you back at 19:32, arriving 21:00. Tuck a long, hot afternoon in between, or hire a car and pair it with the dunes outside town.
Mandore, 9 km north, was the capital before Jodhpur and later the royal cremation ground, with devals (memorial temples) to the Marwar kings up to Takht Singh set in the Mandore Gardens beside the ruins of the old fort. It's a short rickshaw or Uber ride, and late afternoon is the time to go. Combine it with Mahamandir, the temple whose murals show ascetics in yoga poses.
If you want the fort from the air, Flying Fox runs six ziplines over Mehrangarh's battlements and lakes, 1.2 km of cable in all, from its office in the Chokhelao garden inside the fort. It starts at ₹1,699. For something slower, book a dinner at Mehran Terrace on the fort walls, served from 7pm, or plan around the Rajasthan International Folk Festival, which runs October 22 to 26, 2026, timed to the Sharad Purnima full moon.
The Part Most Guides Miss
The stepwells and the water system are the story most guides skip. Jodhpur sits in a desert that got just 0.94 inches (24 mm) of rain in the famine year of 1899, and its rulers built tanks, channels and stepwells to catch every drop. The gully through the Rao Jodha park was a channel carrying rain to Padamsar lake at the fort's base. Toorji ka Jhalra, dated to 1740 and credited to Rani Tanwarji, wife of Abhai Singh, holds water only from June to September, and even many residents can't direct you to it. Visit after the monsoon, when the steps go down into water, and you'll read the whole old city differently.
Where to Base Yourself
Old city (Clock Tower, Navchokiya, Brahmpuri). The pick for a first visit. You walk to the fort, eat at the Clock Tower and sleep in a haveli with a roof facing Mehrangarh. Most guesthouses and the cheapest Hostelworld beds, from about US$1.59 a night, are here, and Zostel has a Clock Tower branch. The catch is noise, steep lanes, scooters at your elbow, and rickshaw drivers on commission. Uber won't reach your door, so pick a place that offers pickups.
Ratanada. Quieter and newer, south of the old city toward the airport, with wider roads where Uber works and a second Zostel at about US$8.74 for a dorm bed. It suits people who want to sleep well after the fort and don't mind a 15 to 20 minute ride into the old city for every meal. You give up the rooftop fort view, which for many people is the point.
Sardarpura. Where local Jodhpur shops and eats, outside the old walls. Gypsy's thali, popular with locals, and Pokar Sweets on Chopasani Road are here, and you'll see far fewer tourists. It's a better base for a longer stay or a working trip than for two nights, since every sight means a ride.
Manai farm stays. MharoKhet, a 40-acre organic farm in Manai village about 50 minutes from the city, added ten cottages in 2025, with doubles from ₹45,000 plus taxes including breakfast. It's a splurge and a different trip, with farm walks, miniature painting and charpoy weaving classes, and stars. You'll need a car for every trip into town.
Realities to Be Aware Of
On a budget, a dorm bed at ₹150 to ₹840, street snacks, a ₹150 train ticket and the ₹800 fort mean a backpacker can get by on about ₹2,000 (about $21) a day. Mid-range means a heritage guesthouse room with a fort view, a hired car for the Osian or Bishnoi day and rooftop dinners, and it costs several times that. Comfortable starts with palace hotels and farm stays like MharoKhet at ₹45,000 a night for two. Train fares barely dent any of these budgets.
The safety problems are mostly petty. The UK warns about pickpockets, ticket touts, and snatch thefts from motorbikes in tourist areas, and about food and drink spiked by strangers. Wikivoyage reports travelers drugged with snacks offered on trains and buses. Women report verbal and physical harassment across India, and the UK advises avoiding isolated places alone. Jodhpur is about 250 km from Pakistan; the UK advises against all travel within 10 km of the border, which doesn't touch the city or Osian but does cover parts of the Jaisalmer and Barmer desert.
Heat is the main health risk from March to October. Average highs pass 100°F (38°C) from April to June, and the monsoon's humidity makes July and August feel worse than the numbers. Carry water, plan sights for early morning and late afternoon, and drink bottled or filtered water. The fort's elevator and the ₹50 fare are worth it on a hot day.
Dress to cover shoulders and knees, and take shoes off at temples and Jain sites. Tip guides and drivers a little for good service. Same-sex relationships are legal in India, but same-sex marriage isn't, and the UK warns that showing affection in public can draw harassment, especially outside big cities. Crowds peak from October to February, through the festival and wedding season, so book fort-view rooms early and be at Mehrangarh at 9am.

If Jodhpur Is Part of a Longer Trip
Jodhpur is the hinge of a western Rajasthan loop. Jaisalmer is west by rail, with seven daily trains (eight on Saturdays) taking five to seven hours; the Swarn Nagari leaves at 04:00 and arrives 09:00, and the Superfast from Sabarmati leaves at 06:10 and arrives 11:50, at ₹210 to ₹250 in sleeper. For Udaipur, most people go by road, about five hours, and stop at the Jain temple at Ranakpur, 160 km from Jodhpur. The bus-and-train way is the 06:05 Vande Bharat to Falna, 1 hour 55 minutes for ₹574, then a taxi to Ranakpur and the local bus on to Udaipur.
For the bigger picture, Jodhpur sits between Delhi and Gujarat on the old caravan road, and the trains still run that way. The Vande Bharat reaches Delhi Cantonment in eight hours for ₹1,623 in chair car, and the overnight Mandore Express leaves at 20:30 and arrives in Delhi at 06:45. South, the Sabarmati Vande Bharat gets to Ahmedabad in six hours. A sensible sequence is Delhi or Agra, then Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, back through Jodhpur and south by road to Udaipur, or by Vande Bharat to Ahmedabad.
Overland to Pakistan is off for now. The UK says the Wagah-Attari crossing is closed, and it advises against all travel within 10 km of the border. If Lahore or Kathmandu are on your route, you'll fly from Delhi. For a longer trip with India in the middle, AirTreks can build a multi-stop ticket that lands you in Delhi and leaves from Mumbai or Ahmedabad, so you don't backtrack across Rajasthan.
Yearly Things to Consider
The desert sets the calendar. Highs sit in the mid-70s to low 80s°F (24°C to 27°C) from December to February, nights get cool, and that's when everyone comes, so book fort-view rooms early. March warms fast, and April to June is brutal, with averages over 100°F (38°C). The monsoon brings most of the year's 16 inches (406 mm) of rain in July and August, though totals swing wildly from year to year. October is the counterintuitive pick: still hot at 96°F (36°C) by day, but it has the folk festival at the fort and the Marwar Festival, held on October 6 and 7 in 2025, with camel shows at the Clock Tower and on the dunes at Osian.
If you can only come in summer, base your days on the fort's 9am opening and the park's 7am summer start, rest from noon to 4pm, and eat late. February is the single best month, with cool days and the Sacred Spirit Festival at Mehrangarh.
Jodhpur month by month
| Month | Temp | Rainfall | Season | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 76°F (25°C) | 0.16 in | High | Cool nights near 49°F (10°C). Peak season, wedding crowds, rooms book up. |
| February | 81°F (27°C) | 0.19 in | High | Best month. Sacred Spirit Festival at the fort, Feb 13-15 in 2026. |
| March | 92°F (33°C) | 0.15 in | Shoulder | Holi. Mornings still pleasant, afternoons getting hot. |
| April | 101°F (38°C) | 0.64 in | Low | Heat sets in. Sightsee before 11am. |
| May | 106°F (41°C) | 1.30 in | Low | Hottest month. Record 119.8°F (48.8°C) in 2016. Sightsee at dawn. |
| June | 104°F (40°C) | 1.66 in | Low | Still searing until the monsoon arrives late in the month. |
| July | 95°F (35°C) | 4.71 in | Low | Wettest month. Humid, stepwells begin to fill. |
| August | 92°F (34°C) | 4.47 in | Low | Monsoon showers, green desert, very few visitors. |
| September | 95°F (35°C) | 2.19 in | Shoulder | Rains taper. Toorji ka Jhalra at its fullest. |
| October | 96°F (36°C) | 0.63 in | High | Folk festival at Mehrangarh Oct 22-26, 2026, and the Marwar Festival. |
| November | 88°F (31°C) | 0.02 in | High | Dry and clear. Season in full swing. |
| December | 80°F (27°C) | 0.04 in | High | Peak holiday and wedding season. Book fort-view rooms early. |
Ideas for Itineraries
3 Days in Jodhpur
Day one, arrive from Jaipur on the morning intercity or the night Vande Bharat and sleep in the old city. Spend the next morning at Mehrangarh from 9am with the audio guide, walk to Jaswant Thada, and end the day with lassi and mirchi bada at the Clock Tower and a rooftop dinner facing the fort. Day three, walk the Rao Jodha park trails at 8am, find Toorji ka Jhalra, then take a rickshaw out to Mandore for the devals in the late afternoon.
5 Days in Jodhpur
Add two days to the three-day plan. On day four, take the 06:10 train to Osiyan for the temples and come back on the 19:52, or hire a car to combine Osian with the dunes. On day five, do the Flying Fox ziplines or a Bishnoi village tour in the morning, visit the Umaid Bhawan museum in the afternoon, and eat a thali at Gypsy in Sardarpura before an early train to Jaisalmer the next morning.
1 Week in Jodhpur
A week lets you fold Jodhpur into a western Rajasthan loop. Spend three days here, take the 04:00 or 06:10 train to Jaisalmer for two nights in the desert, then ride back through Jodhpur and drive south via Ranakpur to Udaipur. Alternatively, stay in Jodhpur for five days at a slower pace, with a night at a farm stay in Manai and dinner at Mehran Terrace, and use the extra time for Osian and an afternoon in the Sardar Market textile lanes.
2 Weeks or More in Jodhpur
For a longer stay, settle in Ratanada or Sardarpura, where Uber works and the streets are calmer, and keep the old city for evenings. Plan on working from your guesthouse or a café rather than a coworking space. Weekend trips go to Jaisalmer by train, Udaipur by car via Ranakpur, and Ranakpur alone via Falna. Time two weeks for February and you catch the Sacred Spirit Festival, or for late October and you get the folk festival and the start of cool weather.
