BootsnAll Scorecard
7.1 / 10
Pune scores best where independent travelers spend their days, eating cheaply and reaching forts on their own, and worst on getting around, because the metro covers the core while buses, traffic and the airport gap do the rest.
- Value
- 8
- At the 8 anchor, with Hostelworld dorms from US$4.23 to $10.60, a ₹20 vada pav on MG Road and ₹10 to ₹30 metro rides, though foreigner pricing such as ₹400 at the Kelkar Museum against ₹120 for Indians takes a little back.
- Getting around
- 5.5
- Just above the 5 anchor, since two metro lines handle the core but the airport has no station, city buses are slow and crowded, the Hinjewadi line is still unopened, and forts like Rajgad need a car and driver.
- Crowds and timing
- 6.5
- Midway between the 5 and 8 anchors, because April averages 100°F (38°C), Sinhagad weekends are crowded enough that the forest department now turns visitors away at capacity, and Ganeshotsav takes over the old city for nearly two weeks, while November to February is dry and easy.
- Safety and hassle
- 6.5
- Between the 5 and 8 anchors, with low violent crime and few touts, set against chain-snatching, auto drivers working around new fares, slippery monsoon trails, and an August 2026 assault on tourists at Sinhagad over their clothing.
- Food and drink
- 8
- At the 8 anchor, because misal, thalis, Irani cafe breakfasts, bakarwadi and mastani are cheap, local and easy to find in the peths, Camp and along FC Road, though the city's fame rests on everyday eating rather than great restaurants.
- Indie fit
- 8
- Near the 8 anchor, since a ₹30 auto, a metro ride or a suburban train gets you to the old city, Lohagad or the Bhaja caves without a tour, in a city whose visitors are mostly Indian students, workers and weekend trekkers.

Overview and Things to Consider
Pune is the city people from Mumbai move to when they want a life. It sits about 570 meters up on the Deccan Plateau where the Mula and Mutha rivers meet, its metro region had 7.2 million people at the 2011 census, and its colleges earned it the nickname Oxford of the East long before IT parks spread west to Hinjewadi and factories north to Pimpri-Chinchwad. Marathi is the language on the street, and the city takes its theater, its December classical music festival and its breakfast seriously. Ask three locals where to eat misal and you'll get three addresses and an argument.
You'll love Pune if you like cities that run for their residents rather than their visitors, if you want to climb a 17th-century hill fort in the morning and be back for lunch, or if you're crossing India slowly and need a cheaper, calmer week than Mumbai offers. You'll hate it if you came for monuments. Shaniwar Wada has been mostly walls since a fire in 1828, the Peshwa mansions survive in fragments, and two-wheeler traffic makes walking between neighborhoods a chore.
The 2026 story is transit. Pune Metro's two lines carried 67.1 million passengers in 2025, up from 9.3 million in 2023, and they changed how the city moved during Ganeshotsav this September. Line 3, the 23 km overhead link to the Hinjewadi IT park, has safety clearance for 17 stations but hadn't opened by early October. The hill forts around the city joined a UNESCO World Heritage listing in July 2025, and weekend crowds at Sinhagad have grown big enough that the forest department now stops entry once the fort reaches capacity.
Koregaon Park gets top billing in most guides, thanks to the Osho resort and its restaurant lanes. It's pleasant, leafy and expensive, and it could be an upmarket enclave in any Indian city. The Pune that is only Pune lies west of the river, in the old peths of Sadashiv, Shukrawar and Kasba and along Fergusson College Road, where students line up at Vaishali and the big Ganesh mandals keep their halls.
How Pune Got Here
Pune's presiding deity is still the Kasba Ganapati, whose temple Jijabai is said to have commissioned, and the modern city grew up around her family. Shahaji Bhosale chose the town as a home for his wife Jijabai and their son Shivaji, and the Lal Mahal palace was finished for them in 1640. Shivaji, born at Shivneri fort north of the city on February 19, 1630, later ruled from Rajgad for about 26 years before moving his capital to Raigad. That's why the hills around Pune are full of forts, and why locals climb them as a kind of pilgrimage rather than a hike to some ruins.
In the 18th century the Peshwas, the hereditary prime ministers of the Maratha state, made Pune a political center for much of the subcontinent. Baji Rao I built Shaniwar Wada in 1732, and by 1758 about a thousand people lived inside its walls. The East India Company defeated the Marathas in 1818, built a large cantonment east of the old city, still known as Camp and still used by the army, and ran the city as Poona. It became a center of reform and nationalism. Jyotirao Phule opened schools for girls and Dalits, Bal Gangadhar Tilak turned Ganesh Chaturthi into a public festival in the 1890s, and the British held Gandhi at the Aga Khan Palace from August 1942 to May 1944.
After independence, the University of Pune (1949), the National Defence Academy (1955) and factories in Bhosari and Hadapsar turned a mid-size town into a metropolis, and the Panshet dam flood of 1961 pushed new suburbs outward. Osho moved his ashram to Koregaon Park in 1974, left in 1981 and came back in 1987, which is why so many foreigners know the name. IT parks at Aundh, Hinjewadi, Viman Nagar and Kharadi started the boom of the 1990s that still shapes the traffic you'll sit in.
Getting There and Around
Pune Airport (PNQ) is an Indian Air Force base at Lohegaon, about 10 km northeast of the center, that also handles civilian flights, and photography is banned because of the military presence. A second terminal opened in July 2024, and the airport handled about 11 million passengers in the year to March 2026. The international list is short. IndiGo flies daily to Dubai, and Air India Express restarted a daily Bangkok flight on August 1, 2026. Most long-haul travelers still arrive through Mumbai, about three hours away by road or rail.
There's no metro to the terminal yet. Ramwadi, the eastern end of the Aqua Line, is about 3 km away and linked by a PMPML feeder bus. Most people take a prepaid taxi, Uber or Ola. Koregaon Park is 5.8 km from the airport, and the ride into the center takes 30 minutes to an hour depending on traffic. From Mumbai, the Deccan Queen covers the 192 km from CSMT in 3 hours 10 minutes, and MSRTC's air-conditioned Shivneri buses run the expressway around the clock, about every 15 minutes. If you fly into Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI), open since December 25, 2025, near Panvel, you skip the crawl across Mumbai, and the expressway's Missing Link, opened May 1, 2026, takes about 30 minutes off the climb through the Bhor Ghat.
Citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and the EU need a visa, and the e-Visa is the easy route. Apply 4 to 120 days before arrival, with six months left on your passport and two blank pages. The official fee table, current in October 2026, charges US$25 for a 30-day e-Tourist Visa from July to March and US$10 from April to June, US$40 for one year, and for five years US$200 for most of these passports, US$160 for Americans and US$484 for British citizens, plus a 3 percent bank charge. The 30-day visa can't be extended, and Pune is a designated e-Visa arrival airport. You also file an e-Arrival card online within 72 hours before landing; it replaces the paper form and isn't a visa.
Pune Metro is the first thing to learn. The Purple Line runs 16.6 km from PCMC Bhavan through Shivajinagar and underground stations at Kasba Peth and Mandai to Swargate, and the Aqua Line runs 14.7 km from Vanaz through Deccan Gymkhana and Pune Railway Station to Ramwadi. They cross at District Court. Fares run ₹10 to ₹30, and you can buy QR tickets at the station or by sending "Hi" to Maha-Metro's WhatsApp number. City buses are run by PMPML on a fleet of CNG and electric buses with distance-based fares, and they reach almost everywhere, slowly. Most visitors use them only for the airport feeder or a long cross-town hop.
Auto-rickshaws fill the gaps. From September 1, 2026, the official fare is ₹30 for the first 1.5 km and ₹20 a km after that, the fourth rise since 2021, and drivers have six months to recalibrate their meters. Until then they must carry the printed fare chart, so ask to see it. Expect a little extra after midnight or for big bags, and flag autos on the street rather than at stands, where drivers ask more. Uber and Ola work across the city. Walking works inside the peths and Camp and is miserable along the arterial roads, where two-wheelers own every gap.
What's Changed Since 2016
The metro went from novelty to habit. The first stretches opened in March 2022, the underground run to Swargate on September 29, 2024, and ridership jumped from 9.3 million in 2023 to 67.1 million in 2025. On the Ganeshotsav schedule, September 14 to 26, 2026, trains ran every five minutes at peak and until 2 am from September 17 to 24, then for 41 straight hours over Anant Chaturdashi on September 25. Mandai station ran one-way to manage crowds, and the advice to visitors was to get off at Kasba Peth and walk.
Getting in got easier. Pune's second terminal opened in July 2024, Navi Mumbai International Airport began commercial flights on December 25, 2025, and on May 1, 2026, the 13.3 km Missing Link on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway opened, saving about 6 km and 30 minutes between Khopoli and Kusgaon. About 70 percent of expressway traffic switched to it, and in its first 11 days highway police fined 308 drivers, many of them for stopping on the cable-stayed bridge to film it.
UNESCO inscribed the Maratha Military Landscapes of India in July 2025, a dozen forts that include Shivneri, Lohagad and Rajgad in Pune district. Sinhagad isn't on the list, but it's where the pressure shows. After members of a fringe group assaulted visitors there in August 2026 for "wearing short clothes," the forest department said it would set a carrying capacity, cap entry when it's reached, build an app and AI camera monitoring, and eventually require registration.
Costs moved. Auto fares rose to a ₹30 minimum on September 1, 2026, up from ₹18 in 2021, which officials tied to CNG climbing from about ₹91 a kg in 2022 to about ₹96. The e-Visa now prices the 30-day visa by season, US$10 from April to June and US$25 the rest of the year, and an online e-Arrival card has replaced the paper landing form.
The 2026 monsoon swung hard both ways. Lonavala took 670 mm and then 620 mm on back-to-back days in early July, against the 300 to 400 mm it gets on a typical peak day, and the rain set off landslides and disrupted road and rail links through the ghat section. Then the rains failed in September, and the Kas Plateau committee reported its flower bloom at about half the usual size.
What the Usual Advice Gets Wrong
"Pune is Mumbai's IT suburb. Do it as a day trip." The Deccan Queen takes 3 hours 10 minutes each way, so a day trip buys you Shaniwar Wada and a lot of traffic. Two or three nights get you a fort at sunrise, misal in the peths, and the suburban train to the Bhaja caves and Lohagad, which is the part of Pune that makes the trip.
"Take the metro in from the airport." There's no airport station. The nearest stop, Ramwadi on the Aqua Line, is about 3 km away and served by a PMPML feeder bus. With bags, a prepaid taxi, Uber or Ola is the realistic option, and it takes 30 minutes to an hour to reach the center.
"The Hinjewadi IT park is on the metro now, so stay out there." Line 3 had safety clearance for 17 of its 23 stations by September 23, 2026, but the opening was waiting on an inauguration slot with the prime minister and on an election code of conduct in force until the end of October. Check that it's running before booking a Hinjewadi hotel.
"The monsoon is the off season, so the forts and Lonavala will be quiet." The monsoon is peak season for Pune's and Mumbai's own weekend trekkers. Sinhagad jams on weekends and holidays, and in early July 2026 nearly 1,300 mm of rain in 48 hours set off landslides around Lonavala, including one at a resort on the edge of town. Go on weekdays, skip waterfalls and cliff edges, and don't hike the hills alone.
"Insist on the meter and you'll pay the right fare." After the September 1, 2026, fare revision, meters that haven't been recalibrated still show the old rates, and drivers have until early 2027 to recalibrate. They're required to carry the new chart, ₹30 for the first 1.5 km and ₹20 a km after, and the fair price is the chart, not the meter.
Ideas to Consider for Your Visit
Have you thought about eating your way through the old city before 10 am? Misal, a spicy Maharashtrian curry eaten with pav, is the Pune breakfast, and the usual recommendations are Bedekar Misal in the peths and Shree Uphar Gruha at Tulshibaug. Follow it with a mastani, a milkshake with ice cream on top, at Sujata Mastani in Sadashiv Peth, and a pack of bakarwadi from Chitale Bandhu, the sweet shop the Chitale family opened in the early 1950s, at ₹100 a pack. Shaniwar Wada, the Lal Mahal and the Kasba Ganapati temple are a short walk apart. The Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum on Bajirao Road shows about 2,500 of one man's 20,000 objects, carved temple doors, lamps and 17th-century paintings among them, for ₹400 for foreigners, open 10 am to 5:30 pm.
Sinhagad, 28 km southwest, is where Pune goes on Sunday. A road runs to the top, but the point is the 2.7 km trail from the base, about 600 meters of climbing to a fort at 1,317 meters, with the memorial to Tanaji Malusare, the Maratha general of the 1670 Battle of Sinhagad. Shared taxis run to both the base and the summit. Go on a weekday, early, and dress modestly. After the August 2026 assault on visitors over their clothes, the forest department is adding guards and holding new arrivals back once the fort reaches capacity, which makes it a calmer place for the next visitor and a slower one to get into.
The Pune-Lonavala suburban line is the cheapest ticket into the Western Ghats. Its local trains run from Pune Junction and stop at Malavli, 2 km from the Bhaja Caves, a group of early Buddhist rock-cut caves, and the start of the climb to Lohagad, one of the UNESCO-listed forts, first fortified around the 10th century and later held by the Marathas. The Karla Caves are close by toward Lonavala. In the rains, keep to the main paths, and don't go up alone, which Wikivoyage's local writers flag as unwise for anyone.
Spend an afternoon on the Gandhi trail. The Aga Khan Palace, built in 1892, is where the British held Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and his secretary Mahadev Desai from August 1942 to May 1944. Kasturba and Desai both died there, and their samadhis are in the grounds, which the ASI declared a monument of national importance in 2003. Then head to Camp: Kayani Bakery on East Street for Shrewsbury biscuits (it closes for a long lunch, 1 to 3:30 pm), Garden Vada Pav Centre on MG Road for a ₹20 vada pav, and Vohuman Cafe on Dhole Patil Road for an Irani cheese omelette and bun maska.
In August and September, have you thought about Kas Plateau? It's a 10 square km volcanic plateau at 1,200 meters west of Satara, part of the Western Ghats World Heritage Site, and in a good year it's covered in wildflowers, orchids and carnivorous sundews. Entry costs ₹200, which includes parking and the shuttle bus, and online tickets must be printed because screenshots aren't accepted. 2026 was a weak season, with the bloom at about half its usual size after a late, dry monsoon, so check the Kas Plateau committee before you commit a day to it.
The Part Most Guides Miss
The best thing about Pune is its classical music and its bookshops. The Sawai Gandharva festival, running since the 1960s, fills three days each December from dawn to dusk, and nearly every major Indian classical artist has played it. Add the Film and Television Institute of India, the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute and Deccan College for Indology, Pune International Film Festival week in January, and the bookshop cluster around Appa Balwant Chowk, some specializing in law, music or religion, and you get a city that reads and listens more than it performs for visitors. Most guides lead with Osho. Lead with December.
Where to Base Yourself
Deccan Gymkhana and FC Road. The best all-round base for a first visit. Deccan Gymkhana and Garware College stations on the Aqua Line, plus Shivajinagar on the Purple Line, put most of the city one ride away, and Fergusson College Road and JM Road are packed with cheap student places such as Vaishali for South Indian breakfasts and the Irani Cafe Goodluck for its bread and mutton kheema. The 8th-century Pataleshwar cave temple is nearby. The catch is noise: these are loud, narrow-pavement roads, and you'll want a room at the back.
Koregaon Park. For restaurants, bars and green lanes of British-era bungalows. North Main Road and Lanes 6 and 7 hold most of the nightlife, the Osho resort and Osho Teerth Park are here, the airport is 5.8 km away and Pune Junction 3.8 km. The catch is that it's an enclave. Prices run higher, the metro doesn't run through it, and every trip to the peths means an auto across the river or a ride to the Aqua Line at Bund Garden.
Camp (Pune Cantonment). The base if you're arriving and leaving by train. The old British cantonment, still used by the Indian Army, has MG Road and East Street shopping, Kayani Bakery and the old Irani cafes, and budget beds such as Hostells, about 1 km from Pune Railway Station. The catch is that India's e-Visa terms exclude cantonment areas, so keep to the civilian shopping streets and stay out of anything signed as military.
Realities to Be Aware Of
Pune is cheap by big-city Indian standards. Hostelworld lists 18 hostels with dorms from US$4.23 to $10.60 (about ₹405-1,020) and private rooms from about $7 to $23. A budget day of a dorm bed, a misal breakfast, a thali, a vada pav and a handful of metro and auto rides comes to roughly ₹1,500-2,500 (US$16-26). A mid-range day with a private room and sit-down dinners runs about double, while the Westin, the Conrad and the Taj Blue Diamond in Koregaon Park sit at the top of the market.
Violent crime against visitors is rare. The everyday risks are chain-snatching and phone theft, sometimes from passing motorbikes, so leave gold jewelry at home. Fake stranded travelers asking for bus fare work FC Road and JM Road. The UK's travel advice warns of spiked drinks and methanol in illicit alcohol, so drink at licensed bars. Women travelers do go out at night in Koregaon Park, Camp and the commercial areas, but climbing the surrounding hills alone is a bad idea for anyone, and so is hiring a cab alone late at night. Traffic is the biggest physical danger, especially two-wheelers that ignore lanes.
Monsoon trails are where visitors get hurt. India's monsoon, June to October, brings flash floods and landslides, and around Pune that means streams that rise fast, loose rock on fort walls and fog that hides cliff edges. Lonavala's back-to-back 600 mm days in July 2026 killed at least one person in a resort landslide. Check the forecast, carry a torch and first-aid kit, tell someone your route, and turn back when the rain gets heavy.
Pune's attitudes are more liberal than its reputation, but forts and temples are the wrong places to test that. Cover knees and shoulders at Sinhagad, Shivneri and the Ganesh temples. Same-sex relationships are legal in India, though same-sex marriage isn't, and the UK's advice notes that Indian society is conservative about LGBT+ people, so keep public affection low-key. During Ganeshotsav, mandals block streets in the old city for ten days and the metro runs extended hours, so plan any errand in the peths around the crowds.

If Pune Is Part of a Longer Trip
Pune sits on the main line from Mumbai to the south. The Deccan Queen, running since 1930, leaves Pune at 7:15 am and reaches Mumbai CSMT at 10:25 am, and the evening run leaves CSMT at 5:10 pm and arrives at 8:25 pm. It still has its dining car and a Vistadome coach for the Bhor Ghat views, which makes it the train to take. On one Sunday in August 2026 the airport ran 19 flights to Delhi and 17 to Bangalore, plus Chennai, Hyderabad and four to Goa's Mopa airport.
On a multi-stop route, Pune works as the hinge between Mumbai and the Deccan. A good overland sequence is Mumbai, two or three nights in Pune, a night near Lonavala for the caves, then a flight south or to Goa. With daily direct flights to Dubai and Bangkok you can also start or end an India leg here and skip Mumbai's airports, the kind of open-jaw routing AirTreks builds. In the dry season, add Shivneri near Junnar, Shivaji's birthplace, with the Buddhist Lenyadri caves 2 km away.
Yearly Things to Consider
Pune's year runs on the southwest monsoon hitting the Western Ghats. The city sits in their rain shadow and gets about 33 inches a year, nearly all of it from June to October, while Lonavala, at the crest of the ghats, can take more than that in a single July week. So the counterintuitive advice is that the wettest months are when the hills look their best and the trails are at their worst. Go mid-week in July and August if you want green forts and waterfalls, and from November to February if you want dry 85°F to 90°F (29°C to 32°C) days and cool nights.
Avoid April and May, when highs average 99°F to 100°F (37°C to 38°C). Ganeshotsav falls in August or September by the Hindu calendar; in 2026 it ran September 14 to 25, ending with the immersion processions on Anant Chaturdashi. It's a reason to come if you like crowds and drums, and a reason to stay away if you need a quiet hotel in the peths. December brings Sawai Gandharva and the best weather.

Ideas for Itineraries
3 Days in Pune
Day one in the old city: misal at Shree Uphar Gruha, the Kasba Ganapati temple, Lal Mahal and Shaniwar Wada, then the Kelkar Museum on Bajirao Road and a mastani in Sadashiv Peth, with the metro from Kasba Peth or Mandai to get back. Day two, leave early for Sinhagad and walk up from the base, then spend the afternoon at the Aga Khan Palace and eat in Koregaon Park. Day three, take a morning local from Pune Junction to Malavli for the Bhaja Caves and the climb to Lohagad, and come back on an evening train.
5 Days in Pune
Add the 8th-century Pataleshwar cave temple near Jangli Maharaj Road, carved out of a single boulder in what is now the middle of Shivajinagar, and an evening at the Shaniwar Wada light and sound show. Spend an afternoon in Camp for Kayani Bakery, Garden Vada Pav and an Irani cafe. Give one full day to Rajgad, about 60 km out, Shivaji's capital for some 26 years and part of the UNESCO listing, with a hired car and driver, and add Torna if your legs are up to it.
1 Week in Pune
With a week, go out to the hills overnight. Take the local toward Lonavala, see the Karla and Bhaja caves, and sleep up in the ghats before coming back. Spend another day at Shivneri near Junnar, Shivaji's birthplace, with the Lenyadri caves 2 km away. In August or September, swap one of those for Kas Plateau after checking the bloom report. Keep an evening for FC Road, where Vaishali and Cafe Goodluck are full of students who will tell you which fort to do next.
2 Weeks or More in Pune
For a longer stay, settle near Deccan Gymkhana or in Koregaon Park. Hostelworld lists co-working hostels such as The Voyage Cafe Hostel CoWork and Travotown Hostel & Co-Work. Take a short course in yoga, classical music or Marathi, which the city's institutes offer visitors. Use the weekends for the Deccan Queen to Mumbai, a cheap flight to Goa, or a dry-season run of forts with a driver. Time it for December and you get Sawai Gandharva too.

Pune Travel FAQ
That's the local legend. In 1773 the young Peshwa Narayanrao was murdered by palace guards on the orders of his uncle Raghunathrao and aunt Anandibai, and the story says his ghost still calls for help on full-moon nights. What you'll actually find is a fortified wall, the spike-studded Delhi Darwaza and the lotus fountain, since an unexplained fire destroyed most of the palace in 1828. The evening light and sound show runs in Marathi, Hindi and English.
Only if you want the city at full volume. More than 2,000 mandals set up pandals, Dagdusheth Halwai being the biggest, and the interior roads of the old city are close to blocked for ten days. In 2026 the metro ran 41 hours nonstop on the final day to move the crowds to the immersion processions. The date moves with the Hindu calendar, usually landing around September, and rooms in the peths fill early.
Marathi is the official language and the one you'll hear on the street, but most people also speak Hindi and English. Students, restaurant staff and anyone in IT will switch to English without blinking. Auto drivers and older shopkeepers in the peths are where a few words of Marathi or Hindi help.
Osho, born Chandra Mohan Jain, moved his ashram to two houses and 6 acres in Koregaon Park in 1974 and taught there until 1981, when he left for the United States. He returned in January 1987 and died in Pune in 1990. The ashram is now the Osho International Meditation Resort, run by the Osho International Foundation, and it still draws foreign and Indian visitors for meditation programs. Next door, Osho Teerth Park is a public garden built on what was a sewage wasteland.
Yes, and half of Pune and Mumbai will be there with you on weekends. Lonavala normally gets 300 to 400 mm of rain in a day at the peak of the monsoon, and in July 2026 it took nearly 1,300 mm in 48 hours, with landslides at resorts on the edge of town. Go mid-week, watch the weather alerts, and stay away from waterfalls and stream crossings after heavy rain.
