Condense Your Technology

Updated 2026

Technology for RTW should be minimal and multifunctional.

Essentials:

  • Phone (camera, maps, communication, banking)
  • Charger (ideally universal voltage 100-240V)
  • Power bank (real 20,000+ mAh, not garbage)
  • Headphones (optional, but helpful for long transport)

Optional:

  • Laptop (only if you work remotely or seriously blog; most travelers don't need it)
  • Tablet (rarely necessary; phone covers most needs)
  • Camera (if photography is serious hobby; phone cameras are adequate for memory)

The key: multifunctionality. Your phone is your camera, maps, travel guide, communication hub, banking portal, translator, flashlight.

Charging strategy: universal voltage charger works everywhere 100-240V. USB power banks charge multiple devices. One cable that works with USB-C and other connectors means carrying fewer cables.

Software redundancy: download offline maps (Google Maps, MAPS.ME), offline guides, offline translation apps. Don't rely on internet for everything.

Rule: if technology doesn't actively serve your travel (work, documentation, serious hobby), don't pack it. Every device adds weight, requires charging infrastructure, and risks loss/theft.
