Use Discretion When Hiring a Guide

Updated 2026

Use discretion when hiring a guide or driver, especially when approached by touts at borders, bus stations, or tourist areas. Set clear prices before entering the car. Don't assume anything about what's included.

The problem: Touts make money by directing tourists to specific accommodations, restaurants, or guides. They get a commission. You get overcharged. Their "helpful" recommendation isn't about you; it's about their payout.

What to do instead:

  • If approached, be polite but noncommittal. Don't accept rides from unsolicited offers.
  • Ask your hotel or hostel for recommendations. They get repeat business from legitimate providers.
  • Research beforehand. Use travel apps to find guides with actual ratings.
  • If you hire independently, negotiate and confirm:
  • Hourly or daily rate
  • What's included (transportation, food, entrance fees)
  • Where you're going and how long
  • Languages spoken
  • What happens if you want to leave early
  • Get details in writing, even a text message confirming terms.
  • Never hand over payment upfront for the entire day. Pay hourly or at checkpoints.

The reason for discretion: The person who picks you up might not be your guide. The driver is the driver. The guide is someone else. Clarify roles and don't assume anything.

Legitimate guides and drivers exist everywhere. They're booked through established operators, have real reviews, and don't need to hustle tourists at bus stations. Work with professionals, not unsolicited touts.
