Watch Your Meds

Updated 2026

Watch your prescription medications like valuables, because they are. Controlled substances (painkillers, benzodiazepines, ADHD medications, sleeping pills) have street value. People steal them. Thieves target backpackers knowing they carry medications.

Prevention strategies:

  • Store in hostel safe, not your dorm room
  • Keep in original prescription bottles with your name
  • Never display or discuss your medications with strangers
  • Split supply: Some daily, some in backup location
  • Don't leave medications visible in your room

If theft happens:

  • Report to hostel management and local police (document for insurance)
  • Contact your doctor via email/phone for emergency authorization
  • Contact your embassy if you're remote
  • Buy replacements locally if available
  • Some travel insurance covers medication replacement

Legal considerations: Some countries restrict medications legal in your home country. Research before traveling. A prescription from your doctor helps explain why you're carrying controlled substances, but it's not a guarantee of legality in every destination.

Pharmacies while traveling: Most countries sell common medications without prescription. Antibiotics, pain relievers, anti-diarrheal agents are available everywhere. Your personal medications might be replaceable if needed.

The core point: Medications are medical care, not souvenirs. Protect them like the essential items they are. Thieves target them; vigilance prevents loss.
