BootsnAll Scorecard
5.9 / 10
Krabi scores best on scenery you can reach cheaply and on market food in town, and worst on getting around, because the sights are scattered across a province and half of them sit behind a boat ride or a hired driver.
- Value
- 6.5
- Between the 5 and 8 anchors, since Hostelworld dorms start around US$4 to $12 and street dishes run 50 to 100 baht, but 400-baht park and pool fees and Ao Nang's Phuket-level prices add up fast.
- Getting around
- 4.5
- Below the 5 anchor, because songthaews link Krabi Town and Ao Nang but Emerald Pool, the hot springs and Tiger Cave need a scooter or a 1,500 to 2,000 baht driver, and Railay is boat-only.
- Crowds and timing
- 5
- At the 5 anchor, with day-trip boats crowding Railay and Phi Phi at midday from November to April, and a monsoon that brings 12.7 inches of rain in October and shuts Maya Bay every August and September.
- Safety and hassle
- 6
- Between the 5 and 8 anchors, since the scams are the familiar ones, but 2026 brought a kayak death off Railay, a capsized Hong Island tour boat and two deaths in three days on the Tiger Cave stairs, so the sea and the heat are the real risks.
- Food and drink
- 7
- Near the 8 anchor in Krabi Town, where the pier night market sells Muslim-influenced dishes for 30 to 60 baht, and closer to 5 on the Ao Nang beachfront.
- Indie fit
- 6.5
- The easy path is a packaged four-island or Phi Phi tour, but Krabi Town, public ferries from Klong Jilad pier and a night on Railay or Ko Jum reward anyone who plans their own days.

Overview and Things to Consider
Most people who say they went to Krabi mean Ao Nang. Wikivoyage notes the beach town is colloquially called Krabi, and that in high season, roughly November through April, it is one of the most expensive places in Thailand outside Bangkok, priced like Phuket. Krabi itself is a provincial capital of about 32,000 people on the Krabi River, 15 kilometers away, and most visitors only see its bus terminal. The province around them both holds Railay, Phi Phi, Ko Lanta and more than 150 islands, which is why the name is so slippery.
You'll love it if your idea of a good day is a longtail ride to a limestone wall, a swim, a plate of rice and curry, and a sunset with the karst islands in silhouette. Backpackers found Railay in the 1970s, climbers made it a winter home, and it now has more than 700 bolted routes. You'll hate it if you want a walkable city or a calm sea in October. Krabi Town has no beach, Ao Nang's main beach is lined with tour boats, and the good beaches cost a boat ticket.
Here's the position this guide takes. Base yourself in Krabi Town for the food and the ferries, or on Railay for the cliffs, and treat Ao Nang as the place you pass through to catch a boat. The town is cheaper, its markets are better, and the Phi Phi and Lanta ferries leave from Klong Jilad pier just outside it.
The 2026 moment is mixed. Thailand cut the visa-free stay for Americans, Britons, Canadians, Australians and EU citizens from 60 days to 30 on September 15, 2026. A fuel price shock that began in March pushed up ferry fares and grounded some flights over the summer. But airport traffic is climbing again, past 3 million passengers in 2025, Finnair resumes and SAS starts direct winter flights from Helsinki and Copenhagen in late 2026, and Maya Bay reopened on October 1 after a survey found as many as 278 reef sharks in its water.
How Krabi Got Here
People were living in Krabi's limestone caves long before anyone built a resort. The Lang Rongrien rockshelter has deposits dated to between 37,000 and 27,000 years ago, and painted rock art around Phang Nga Bay is thought to be 3,000 to 5,000 years old. You can still see paintings at Tham Phi Hua To in Ao Luek. The coast has been on trade routes for a long time, and a bronze seal engraved with a two-masted ship found at Khuan Luk Pat dates to the 2nd century.
The modern town started as an elephant kraal in the late 18th century, set up by the governor of Nakhon Si Thammarat to keep his city supplied. King Chulalongkorn made the settlements a town in 1872, Krabi began reporting straight to Bangkok in 1875, and in 1900 the governor moved the seat from Ban Talad Kao, where the bus terminal is now, to the river mouth. Today about a third of the province is Muslim, and the Urak Lawoi sea people live on Ko Lanta, which is why the food tilts toward roti, curries and halal stalls.
Tourism came late and fast. Backpackers and climbers found Railay in the 1970s, the airport opened in 1999, and the film The Beach made Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh world famous. The tsunami of December 26, 2004 did heavy damage along the coast, though Railay escaped the worst of it. The province now ranks fifth in Thailand for tourism revenue, and palm oil and rubber still cover most of its farmland.
Getting There and Around
Krabi International Airport is KBV, not KBI, and it sits about 7 kilometers east of downtown Krabi, according to Wikipedia. It handled just over 3 million passengers in 2025, with international traffic up 244 percent. Domestic flights come from both Bangkok airports on Thai AirAsia, Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Thai VietJet, plus Chiang Mai and Ko Samui. Direct international flights come from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai and Sharjah, IndiGo's flights from three Indian cities were due back on October 1 after a summer suspension, and Finnair from Helsinki resumes on November 26, 2026, with SAS from Copenhagen starting December 9.
From the airport, the shuttle bus is the cheap option at around 100 to 150 baht depending on where you're going, according to Kiwi.com's June 2026 budget guide. It runs through Krabi Town and the ferry pier to Ao Nang and Noppharat Thara, and Wikivoyage says the driver will drop you at most hotels if you name yours. A private taxi to Ao Nang costs roughly 500 to 800 baht. Grab works in Krabi but is less reliable than in Bangkok, so have a backup plan for late arrivals.
Entry rules changed three weeks ago. Since September 15, 2026, US, Canadian, UK, Australian and EU citizens get 30 days visa-free for tourism, down from 60, and anyone who entered before that date keeps the stay they were given. One extension of up to 30 days is possible at immigration, at the officer's discretion. The UK government says visa-exempt entry is normally limited to two a year, that your passport needs six months of validity, and that officers can ask for an onward ticket and 10,000 baht in funds. Everyone must also file the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card within three days before arrival.
Getting around is where Krabi costs you time. White songthaews, shared pickup trucks, run between the bus terminal, Krabi Town and Ao Nang, and you press the buzzer to get off. Longtail boats are the real public transport on the coast, about 100 baht each way from Ao Nang to Railay, and Wikivoyage says they wait for a load of around eight. Scooters rent for 200 to 300 baht a day. For Emerald Pool and the hot springs, an hour inland, you'll need a scooter, a car or a driver.
What's Changed Since 2016
January 2022: Maya Bay reopened after a closure that began in 2018, when crowds wrecked the reef made famous by The Beach. Swimming is banned, boats land at Loh Samah Bay on the far side of Phi Phi Leh, and the bay now shuts every year from August 1 to September 30. In February 2026 two French visitors were fined for swimming there, under a law that allows fines of up to 100,000 baht. The bay reopened for this season on October 1, 2026, after a September 2 survey by the Department of National Parks counted as many as 278 blacktip reef sharks near the beach.
May 2025: the paper arrival card went digital. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card replaced the old form on May 1, 2025, and it applies whether you arrive by air, land or sea. Then on September 15, 2026, the 60-day visa exemption that had applied since July 2024 ended, replaced by 30 days for 60 countries and territories, published in the Royal Gazette on August 31. A separate 450-baht entry fee for foreign visitors finished public consultation on September 28, 2026 and still needs Cabinet approval, so nobody pays it yet.
March to September 2026: the fuel shock. Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz sent Thai diesel to a record price on April 1, and the Krabi to Phi Phi ferry fare went up the same day. IndiGo suspended its Krabi flights from July 1 to September 30, and Thai AirAsia pulled all its domestic flights out of Suvarnabhumi from July 15. AirAsia returned to Suvarnabhumi on October 1, 2026 with two flights a day to Krabi, and the airport has slot requests for 126 flights this winter.
June 2026: the long-promised links moved a step. The Cabinet approved mangrove land on June 18 for a 2.5-kilometer, 1.8-billion-baht bridge between Ko Klang on the Krabi mainland and Ko Lanta Noi, meant to end the waits at the car ferry crossings, The Thaiger reported. The bridge doesn't exist yet, so plan on the ferries for now.
What the Usual Advice Gets Wrong
"Thailand gives you 60 days visa-free, so you can do a slow two months on the Andaman coast." Not since September 15, 2026. US, Canadian, UK, Australian and EU citizens now get 30 days for tourism, with one extension of up to 30 days at the immigration officer's discretion. Visa-exempt land entries are limited to two a calendar year, so a hop to Malaysia and back is not a free reset. If you want two months, sort out a visa before you fly.
"Krabi Town is just a transit stop. Head straight for Ao Nang." Wikivoyage puts it bluntly. Krabi Town is far cheaper than Ao Nang, especially for food and drink, and its markets sell local cooking that the beach strip doesn't. The Phi Phi and Lanta ferries leave from Klong Jilad pier, about 3 kilometers out of town, so you're closer to the islands here than in Ao Nang.
"Do Phi Phi in a day and swim at Maya Bay, the beach from The Beach." Swimming at Maya Bay is banned and enforced, boats land at Loh Samah on the other side of the island, and the bay closes every August and September. Add the 400-baht national park fee to the tour price. Our advice is to take the 450-baht public ferry and spend a night on Phi Phi Don, when the day boats have gone.
"Tiger Cave Temple is an easy morning climb with a view." It's 1,260 uneven steps to the summit, hard going in the heat. At the end of March 2026 a Canadian visitor collapsed and died near the 1,100th step, three days after a 68-year-old Thai man died at the top. Start at dawn, carry water, and turn back if you feel dizzy. And don't buy the monkey food sold next to the signs telling you not to feed the monkeys.
"Railay is a 10-minute longtail hop, any time of year." In the May to October monsoon the sea off Ao Nang gets rough, and Wikivoyage suggests boarding at Ao Nam Mao instead. In May 2026 a Dutch visitor died after strong wind and waves flipped his kayak between Ko Poda and Railay, and neither he nor his daughter wore a life jacket. On any boat, ask for one and wear it.
Ideas to Consider for Your Visit
Have you thought about getting up early in Krabi Town? The covered morning market on Maharaj Soi 9, behind the Shell station, is the biggest in the south according to Wikivoyage, and it winds down by 8am, when the national anthem plays and the whole market stands still. Come back at dusk for the night market by the Chao Fah pier, where Wikivoyage listed single dishes at 30 to 60 baht in January 2024, and for roti from the stall outside Sin-O-Cha Bakery on Maharaj Road. On Friday to Sunday evenings the Walking Street market sets up near the Vogue department store.
Stay a night on Railay rather than day-tripping. The midday boats from Ao Nang empty out by late afternoon, and Railay West at sunset, with the Sleeping Indian cliffs going dark across the bay, is the reason the peninsula is famous. Walk to Phra Nang beach and its cave shrine full of carved phalluses left by fishermen, then, if you have decent shoes, scramble up the roped trail to the viewpoint and down to the lagoon. It's steep and rocky, and the ropes don't always help.
If you've never climbed, Railay is a strange place to start. Most of its routes are steep, and Wikivoyage warns that sea air corrodes the bolts. But the climbing shops on Railay East and Ton Sai run introductory courses and rent everything, and a morning on the rock teaches you more about the place than any viewpoint. Ton Sai, around the corner from Railay West, is where the climbers and the cheap rooms are, and the Thaiger puts Ton Sai bungalows from about US$25 a night.
Go inland for a day. Emerald Pool, in the Khao Phra Bang Khram wildlife sanctuary, costs foreigners 400 baht and opens from 8:30am to 4:30pm. Solosophie says it fills up with tours from 10am to 3pm, so be there at opening. Combine it with the Khlong Thom hot stream waterfall nearby, 200 baht, where the water runs at 35 to 40°C (95 to 104°F). A driver costs around 1,500 baht for a half day and 2,000 for a full day, and Solosophie reckons a private car makes sense once there are three or more of you.
Pick your island tour by crowd, not by photo. The four-island tour of Ko Poda, Chicken Island and Ko Tup costs 500 to 1,000 baht with transport and a basic lunch, according to Kiwi.com, and it's the famous route. The Hong Islands, part of Than Bok Khorani National Park, have a lagoon and usually smaller crowds. If you'd rather walk, the Tab Kak Hang Nak trail north of Klong Muang beach climbs about 3.7 kilometers to a view over Ao Nang. You sign in at the trailhead, and it turns to mud in the rain.
The Part Most Guides Miss
The best thing about Krabi is the town everyone skips. Krabi Town sits on its river with the twin limestone towers of Khao Khanab Nam a 15-minute longtail ride from the pier, and it runs on market hours rather than tour departures. A third of the province is Muslim, and you taste it at halal kitchens such as Hawa Food on Maharaj Soi 4 and at the roti stalls. Rooms in town cost less than Ao Nang's, the ferry pier is close, and in the evening you're eating with people who live here.
Where to Base Yourself
Krabi Town. The pick if you care about food, ferries and price. The markets are on foot, songthaews run to Ao Nang from the 7-Eleven on Maharaj Road, and Klong Jilad pier for Phi Phi and Lanta is about 3 kilometers away. Pak-Up Hostel, near the center, lists dorms from about US$6 on Hostelworld. The catch is that there's no beach, so every swim starts with a 15-kilometer songthaew ride to Ao Nang.
Ao Nang and Noppharat Thara. The easy base, with longtails to Railay from the beach, tour desks everywhere, restaurants within a short walk, and most of Krabi's hostels, many from US$5 to $9 a night. The catch is the beach itself. Wikivoyage calls the west end littered and crowded with boats, and warns against swimming near the Khlong Haeng creek, which carries sewage. Walk 10 to 15 minutes to Pai Plong, or stay at Noppharat Thara for quieter sand.
Railay and Ton Sai. For climbers and anyone who wants the cliffs at sunset without the day crowds. There are no cars, every landmark is a 5 to 10 minute walk, Railay West has the best swimming, and Ton Sai has the cheap bungalows. The catch is that everything arrives by boat, you'll wade out to the longtail with your bags at Ao Nang, the trip is rough in bad weather, and Railay East is mangrove, not beach.
Realities to Be Aware Of
Mainland Krabi is cheaper than its islands. Hostelworld shows dorms around Krabi Town and Ao Nang mostly from US$5 to $9 a night in October 2026, street dishes cost 50 to 100 baht, and a restaurant meal 100 to 300 baht, according to Kiwi.com. Phi Phi is the expensive end. Nomadic Matt's September 2026 budgets there are 1,750 baht (about $52) a day for a backpacker, 3,100 baht ($92) mid-range and 5,000 baht ($149) and up for comfort. The extras are what break a Krabi budget, with 400-baht park fees, island tours and boat transfers stacking up.
The sea and the heat are the dangers, not crime. People drown in rip currents, mostly in the monsoon, so swim at beaches with lifeguards and obey the red flags. Small boats capsize, as a tour boat bound for Hong Island did on August 15, 2026, injuring seven, when passengers moved around for photos in rough water. In June 2026 park staff banned swimming at beaches on Phi Phi and Ko Lanta after finding Portuguese man o' war, which can sting even when dead on the sand. The UK government warns that many rental scooters are unregistered and can't legally be ridden on a public road, and that your insurance may not cover you.
Know the laws that catch visitors. Vapes, e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn devices are illegal to own, with fines typically 5,000 to 30,000 baht. Cannabis is for medical use only, with a Thai prescription. Smoking in public can bring a fine of up to 5,000 baht, and criticizing the monarchy carries long prison terms. Don't hand over your passport as a deposit for a scooter or jet ski, and watch your drink, because the UK government reports spiking of both men and women and deaths from methanol in bootleg spirits.
Remember that this is a province where a third of people are Muslim. Swimwear belongs on the beach, not in Krabi Town's markets, and don't expect beer at the Maharaj Soi 10 market, which Wikivoyage notes doesn't sell alcohol. Thailand legalized same-sex marriage on January 23, 2025. Carry cash, since Kiwi.com says many small vendors still prefer it, and agree any taxi or tuk-tuk price before you get in.

If Krabi Is Part of a Longer Trip
Krabi is the middle of the Andaman coast, and the neighbors are mostly by boat. Andaman Wave Master runs ferries from Klong Jilad to Phi Phi at 9am and 1pm, two to two and a half hours for 450 baht, with onward boats to Ko Lanta and Phuket. In high season, late October to late April, the Krabi to Lanta ferries stop off Ko Jum, a quiet island of about 1,500 people where longtails meet the ferry offshore. A loop of Krabi Town, Railay, Phi Phi, Lanta and Ko Jum fills two weeks without rushing.
Phuket is 165 kilometers by road, or a ferry ride via Phi Phi, and minivans run between the two bus stations. For the rest of the country, fly. There are flights all day to Bangkok, and Thai AirAsia flies direct to Chiang Mai. Krabi has no railway. Buses from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal take about 12 hours, and the nearest train station is at Surat Thani, three to three and a half hours away by bus, which is also the jumping-off point for the Gulf islands.
Internationally, Krabi flies direct to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and by land Wikivoyage reports minivans to Penang via Hat Yai, 7 to 9 hours including the border. On a Southeast Asia loop, fly into Krabi and out of Bangkok, or the reverse, rather than backtracking. Watch the visa math, because 30 days goes fast and visa-exempt land entries are capped at two a year. An open-jaw or multi-stop ticket from AirTreks can stitch the legs together.
Yearly Things to Consider
Krabi runs on the southwest monsoon. From November to April the sea is calm, the islands are at their best, and prices and crowds peak. January and February are the driest months, with 1.3 and 1.7 inches of rain. From May the rain builds, seas turn rough and some marine parks close. Maya Bay shuts every August 1 to September 30, and the Thai Meteorological Department normals put October, at 12.7 inches over about 21 rainy days, as Krabi's wettest month.
The counterintuitive move is March. Rain is still under 4 inches, the high-season crowds are thinning, and the sea is still calm, though March highs reach 94°F (34°C) and it is no month for the Tiger Cave stairs at noon. October is the trap. Maya Bay reopens on October 1 and the high season is around the corner, but it's the rainiest month of the year. If you do come in the green season, you'll find lower prices and emptier beaches, and you should build spare days in for boats that don't run.
Krabi month by month
| Month | Temp | Rainfall | Season | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 91°F (33°C) | 1.3 in | High | Dry and calm. Peak prices through New Year. |
| February | 94°F (34°C) | 1.7 in | High | Second-driest month and still peak season. |
| March | 94°F (34°C) | 3.9 in | Shoulder | Hot, calm seas, crowds easing. |
| April | 93°F (34°C) | 5.8 in | Shoulder | Still hot, with the rain starting to build. |
| May | 91°F (33°C) | 6.8 in | Low | Monsoon starts. Rougher seas, lower prices. |
| June | 89°F (32°C) | 7.6 in | Low | Jellyfish warnings possible. Quiet beaches. |
| July | 89°F (32°C) | 7.9 in | Low | Green season deals. Boats can cancel. |
| August | 89°F (31°C) | 10.5 in | Low | Maya Bay closed all month. |
| September | 88°F (31°C) | 10.8 in | Low | Maya Bay closed until the 30th. |
| October | 88°F (31°C) | 12.7 in | Low | Wettest month. Maya Bay reopens October 1. |
| November | 88°F (31°C) | 7.1 in | Shoulder | Rain tapers. Finnair's Helsinki flights resume. |
| December | 89°F (31°C) | 2.7 in | High | Dry season returns. SAS's Copenhagen flights begin. |
Ideas for Itineraries
3 Days in Krabi
Sleep in Krabi Town the first night and eat at the pier night market. Next morning, catch the morning market before 8am, take a longtail to Khao Khanab Nam, then a songthaew to Ao Nang and a longtail to Railay, where you stay the second night. Walk to Phra Nang beach, watch sunset on Railay West, and on the third morning do the viewpoint trail before the day boats arrive.
5 Days in Krabi
Do the three-day plan, then add a day inland with a driver for Emerald Pool at 8:30am and the Khlong Thom hot stream, back by mid-afternoon. On day five, take the Hong Islands boat for the lagoon, or skip boats and climb Tiger Cave Temple's 1,260 steps at first light, then spend the afternoon at Noppharat Thara beach. Sleep in town or Ao Nang depending on which you liked.
1 Week in Krabi
Give Krabi Town and Railay four nights as above, then take the 9am ferry from Klong Jilad to Phi Phi Don for two nights. Go to Maya Bay on an early longtail from the island rather than on a mainland day tour, hike the viewpoint, and leave on the ferry to Ko Lanta for a last night. Fly out of Krabi, or carry on south.
2 Weeks or More in Krabi
Slow down on Ko Lanta, the province's biggest island, or on Ko Jum if you want very little at all. Krabi Town works for a longer mainland stay, with cheap rooms, markets and the provincial immigration office for your 30-day extension. Make weekend trips to Railay for a climbing course, to Phi Phi off season, and to Than Bok Khorani and the Ao Luek cave paintings by scooter.

Krabi Travel FAQ
Krabi, if you want limestone scenery, smaller towns and cheaper rooms on the mainland. Phuket, if you want a bigger nightlife scene, since Kiwi.com calls Krabi's more relaxed, and an island joined to the mainland by a road bridge. Phi Phi sits between them, with ferries from Phuket's Rassada pier and Krabi's Klong Jilad. Many people fly into one and out of the other.
Parts of it. The west end is busy with tour boats and litter, and Wikivoyage warns against swimming near Khlong Haeng creek, which carries raw sewage into the sea. The east end is better, and a 10 to 15 minute boardwalk trail leads to Pai Plong beach in front of the Centara resort, which is public even if the guards make you sign in. Noppharat Thara, to the west, is quieter but narrow at high tide.
Yes. Beach bars in Ao Nang and Railay serve cheap beer, and bars in Krabi Town have live music at weekends. Some places don't serve alcohol, including halal restaurants and the Maharaj Soi 10 market in town, so check before you order.
The four-island tour of Ko Poda, Chicken Island and Ko Tup is shorter, cheaper at 500 to 1,000 baht, and busier. The Hong Islands take longer to reach but have the enclosed lagoon and usually fewer boats. If you only do one, Kiwi.com and we both lean toward Hong.
