BootsnAll Scorecard
5.8 / 10
Pattaya is cheap and easy to reach, and much less easy to like. The scores sag on hassle and indie fit, because the center is built to sell you things at night, and they recover once you get out to the islands, the north shore and the Eastern Seaboard.
- Value
- 7
- Near the 8 anchor on the basics, with dorms from about US$6 on Hostelworld, a 144-baht bus from Bangkok and a 30-baht ferry to Ko Lan, but pulled down by tickets like the Sanctuary of Truth's 500 baht and the bar-strip premium on food and drink.
- Getting around
- 6
- Just above the 5 anchor, because the shared baht buses on Beach and Second roads run constantly for 15 to 20 baht, but nothing uses a meter, Pratumnak Hill has no regular service, and an empty songthaew at the curb is a charter at whatever price the driver names.
- Crowds and timing
- 6.5
- Between 5 and 8, since highs stay between 86°F and 91°F (30°C and 33°C) all year and little closes, but September and October bring 8 to 9 inches of rain a month and Wan Lai in April and the fireworks festival in late November fill the beachfront.
- Safety and hassle
- 4.5
- Below the 5 anchor, with jet-ski damage shakedowns, clip-joint bar bills, a herb-shop scam reported twice in September 2026 and a knife-point phone robbery of a British tourist in Jomtien the same month, on top of the worst traffic black spots in town.
- Food and drink
- 6
- Sits near the 5 anchor and a bit above it, because the Isaan som tam and larb stalls that feed the city's migrant workers and the Naklua seafood market are good and cheap, while the beachfront and Walking Street run on pizza, schnitzel and mark-up.
- Indie fit
- 4.5
- Under the 5 anchor, since the easy path is a package of cabaret, tour-desk island trips and a bar strip, though a baht bus, the Bali Hai ferry and the Sukhumvit buses do let you reach Ko Lan, Si Racha and Ko Si Chang on your own.
Editorial scores, 1 to 10, against the same written anchors for every city. Half points allowed. The overall is the plain average of the six.
Overview and Things to Consider
Pattaya is Thailand's beach city nearest Bangkok, about 150 kilometers southeast of the capital on the Gulf of Thailand, and it's big. The municipality has about 116,000 registered residents, but the Pattaya, Chonburi and Si Racha conurbation counts close to a million, the third-largest metro area in the country. For visitors it splits into strips running north to south: Naklua, the 2.7-kilometer Pattaya Beach with Walking Street at its southern end, the Pratumnak headland, and the long, flatter beach at Jomtien.
You'll like Pattaya if you want a cheap, easy beach base two hours from Bangkok, if you're on a long stay and want hospitals, supermarkets and gyms that work, or if you treat the city as a launch pad for islands and the Eastern Seaboard. You'll hate it if the sex trade bothers you, because in the Bay it's the main economy after dark and you can't avoid seeing it on Walking Street, Soi 6 or the beer-bar sois off Second Road. Families and retirees sort themselves south to Jomtien for that reason.
The 2026 moment is a city waiting on infrastructure. A high-speed rail line from Bangkok's two airports to U-Tapao, with a Pattaya station, was supposed to open in 2029, and in July 2026 the private consortium served notice to terminate its contract. Visitor numbers are strong anyway. Chonburi province logged about 4.5 million international visitors between January 1 and June 13, 2026, and the top markets nationally were China, Malaysia, India, Russia and South Korea.
Overrated? Pattaya Beach itself. It's narrow, lined with deck chairs, and the regional environmental office graded the water off the central beaches as poor in 2016. Go to Ko Lan or Naklua to swim.
How Pattaya Got Here
The name goes back to the months before Ayutthaya fell in 1767, when Phraya Tak, the general who became King Taksin, marched his army from Ayutthaya toward Chanthaburi and met a local leader named Nai Klom here. Nai Klom surrendered without a fight, the spot became Thap Phraya, the army of the Phraya, and the name drifted into Phatthaya, the word for the southwest wind that opens the rainy season. For the next two centuries it was a fishing village, and the Naklua end, with its seafood market and boats, still feels like one.
Tourism arrived with the Americans. On June 29, 1959, a group of servicemen from the base at Korat rented houses at the south end of the beach, on the stretch now called the Strip, and during the Vietnam War Pattaya became the R&R town for US personnel at U-Tapao and other Thai bases. Thailand made Pattaya a city with its own special administration on November 29, 1978, and in 1981 Lek Viriyaphan began the all-wood Sanctuary of Truth on the Naklua shore. Since the 2010s the city has tried to sell itself as family-friendly, closing some of the worst bars, while the Eastern Seaboard industrial zone at Laem Chabang and Si Racha turned the region into a working city as well as a resort.
Getting There and Around
From Bangkok, take the bus. Roong Reuang Coach runs from the Eastern bus terminal at Ekkamai, next to BTS Ekkamai, at 05:00, 06:00 and then hourly from 09:00 to 22:00 for 144 baht. Buy at counter 13 on the ground floor and board at platform 1. From Mo Chit 2, near BTS Mo Chit and MRT Chatuchak, the motorway service costs 155 baht, counter 34 and platform 42, hourly from 05:00 to 18:00. Both take about two hours and end at the bus station on North Pattaya Road. Coming back, Ekkamai buses leave Pattaya from 04:30 to 22:00, and the first buses of the day are the fastest. A dark-blue songthaew from the bus station into town should be the normal shared fare, but drivers often ask 150 to 200 baht, so flag a moving one instead of negotiating with a parked one.
The train is slower, cheaper and more fun. Ordinary train 283 leaves Bangkok's old Hua Lamphong station at 06:55 and reaches Pattaya at 10:34, third class only, 31 baht, tickets sold at the station within the hour before departure. Seat61, updated October 1, 2026, lists it daily, while Wikivoyage says it runs Monday to Friday, so check at the station before a weekend. On Saturdays and Sundays the air-conditioned special express 887 leaves at 06:45 and gets in at 09:13 for 170 baht, and 888 returns at 16:26. Pattaya station is inland, east of Sukhumvit Road, and a songthaew waiting for the train charges 30 baht to the beach.
Most flights land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), about two hours away by road. Roong Reuang's airport bus leaves from Level 1, Gate 8, at 07:30, 09:30, 11:30, 13:30, 15:30, 17:30 and 18:30 for 135 baht and takes about two hours to the North Pattaya bus station, and an hourly service to Jomtien runs 06:00 to 22:00 for 158 baht. U-Tapao (UTP), the old US air base 30 to 50 minutes' drive south, is closer but has few routes. Bangkok Airways flies from there to Ko Samui and Phuket, and the small carrier EZY Airlines flies 10-seat Cessna Caravans to Surat Thani and, from October 23, 2026, to Hua Hin four days a week, with fares from 2,900 baht. A shared minibus from U-Tapao to Pattaya is about 150 baht.
Entry rules changed on September 15, 2026. Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and every EU country now get up to 30 days visa-free for tourism, down from 60, and the UK government says visa-exempt entries are normally limited to two per calendar year. One extension of up to 30 days is possible at immigration for a reported 1,900 baht, at the officer's discretion. Passports need six months of validity, officers can ask to see 10,000 baht per person and an onward ticket, and everyone has to fill in the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within three days before arrival.
In town, the baht bus is the transit system. More than 700 dark-blue pickup trucks loop south down Beach Road and north up Second Road almost nonstop, and other routes run along the cross streets, out to Naklua and over the hill to Jomtien from the corner of Second Road and South Pattaya Road. Since April 10, 2026, a shared ride costs 15 to 20 baht. Press the buzzer under the roof when you want to get off. Taxis in Pattaya don't use meters, motorbike taxis cost more than a metered taxi in Bangkok, and the Bolt app works. Pratumnak Hill has no regular songthaew.
What's Changed Since 2016
2018 to 2019: Pattaya Beach got its sand back, sort of. Erosion had narrowed parts of a beach that used to be 35 meters wide to two or three meters, and a 429-million-baht restoration began in 2018, pumping 360,000 cubic meters of sand from offshore to widen it to about 50 meters. It was the first beach in Thailand rebuilt with imported sand, and floods damaged the first 400-meter stretch within a month. The wider beach is real. The sewage system behind it is the weak part, and when the city approved 188 million baht for repairs in November 2018, more than a third of the plant equipment was found to be 40 to 50 percent worn out.
July 2025: the Cambodian border shut. Fighting between Thai and Cambodian forces in July 2025, and again in early December, closed the land crossings, and the UK government says in October 2026 that they remain suspended and advises against all but essential travel within 20 kilometers of the border. That cuts off the old minibus run from Pattaya to the Hat Lek crossing and the Aranyaprathet route to Siem Reap. Fly instead.
2025 to 2026: the arrival card and the visa got stricter. The paper TM6 gave way to the Thailand Digital Arrival Card on May 1, 2025, and on September 15, 2026, the visa-free stay for most Western passports fell from 60 days to 30. In Naklua, the city rebuilt the Lan Pho seafood market for up to 60 vendors, and when it reopened in August 2025 officials were already worried about crowding and traffic.
April 2026: the baht bus fare went up. Citing diesel prices, songthaew operators set fares on April 10, just before Songkran, within Pattaya at 15 to 20 baht a trip, depending on distance. Nobody has said whether it's permanent.
July 2026: the airport train slipped again. The 220-kilometer high-speed line linking Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi and U-Tapao, with stations at Chonburi, Si Racha and Pattaya, had made virtually no progress by the end of 2025, and the CP Group-led consortium gave notice in July 2026 that it wanted out. The revised target was 2030, on a five-year build. Meanwhile Pattaya City is studying a 9.9-kilometer Green Line tram from the railway station to Bali Hai Pier.
What the Usual Advice Gets Wrong
"Getting from Bangkok to Pattaya means a taxi or a tour-desk minivan." Roong Reuang's coaches leave Ekkamai about every hour for 144 baht and Suvarnabhumi Airport's Gate 8 for 135 baht, and take about two hours. Third-class train 283 costs 31 baht. Wikivoyage puts a returning taxi to Suvarnabhumi at 800 baht plus tolls, and warns that some quoted taxi prices turn out to exclude the expressway tolls.
"Baht buses cost 10 baht, anywhere in town." That was the fare for years, and guidebooks still print it. Since April 10, 2026, it's 15 to 20 baht, depending on distance. The bigger trap is the empty songthaew parked at the roadside: get in and talk to the driver first, and you've hired a taxi at his price. Flag a moving one that already has passengers and just ride.
"Pattaya Beach is the reason to come." The Bay beach is narrow, packed with deck chairs and hawkers, and the regional environmental office graded the water off central Pattaya as poor while rating Naklua, Jomtien and Ko Lan as fairly good. In July 2017 raw sewage from a storm drain fouled it for a week. Swim on Ko Lan, a 30-baht ferry away, or at the Naklua end.
"Thailand gives you 60 days on arrival, so you can stay two months." Not since September 15, 2026. US, Canadian, UK, Australian and EU passports get 30 days for tourism, normally on two visa-free entries a year, and one 30-day extension at immigration is at the officer's discretion. Plan a longer Gulf coast stay around a tourist visa bought before you go.
"Hop over to Cambodia by minibus from Pattaya." Land crossings between Thailand and Cambodia have been suspended since the fighting in 2025, and the UK government still advises against all but essential travel within 20 kilometers of the border in October 2026. Fly from Bangkok to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh instead.
"Rent a jet ski, it's the fun way to see the bay." The jet-ski damage shakedown is Pattaya's best-known scam. Operators find scratches on return and demand payment, and Wikivoyage reports claims of up to 100,000 baht and tourists still paying around 10,000 after embassies got involved. Never leave your passport as a deposit, and call the Tourist Police on 1155 if it happens.
Ideas to Consider for Your Visit
Have you thought about spending a morning at the Sanctuary of Truth? It's the best thing in Pattaya. Lek Viriyaphan, who also built the Ancient City outside Bangkok, started it in 1981 on the point at Laem Ratchawet in Naklua, and the carvers are still at it, so it's a working site. The building is all wood, joined without nails using old Thai carpentry methods, and the museum calls it the largest wooden castle in the world. It's open 08:00 to 18:00 with a night session from 18:20, and adults pay 500 baht by day or 700 for the night tour. Go at opening, before the tour buses.
Ko Lan is the swimming beach Pattaya Bay isn't. Ferries leave Bali Hai Pier, at the south end of Walking Street, from 07:00 for 30 baht and take about 30 minutes, some to Na Ban pier and some to Tawaen Beach, with the last boat back at 18:00. From Na Ban, take a 20 to 30 baht songthaew to Samae, Tien or Nual instead. Skip the speedboat tours sold on Beach Road, which charge for what the ferry does for the price of a baht bus ride, and if the water looks green after heavy rain, it's a plankton bloom, which happened again on September 30, 2026.
Eat the way Pattaya's workers eat. Many of the people who keep the city running come from Isaan, the northeast, so the som tam, larb and sticky rice stalls are the best cheap food in town, and Wikivoyage points to the stalls along Soi 15, just off Walking Street, for 30 to 50 baht plates. For seafood, go north to Lan Pho Naklua, the seafood market that reopened in August 2025, or to Pupen, an open-air seafood place at the far southern end of Jomtien that's popular with Thais. Nangnual, on the water at Walking Street, has been serving seafood since 1965.
Climb Pratumnak at sunset. Buddha Hill, the headland between South Pattaya and Jomtien, has Wat Khao Phra Bat and the city's largest Buddha on top, and the next hill over has the best view back across Pattaya Bay. There's no regular songthaew, so it's a motorbike taxi, Bolt or a sweaty walk up from the end of Second Road. Come back down for dinner in Jomtien.
Spend a day at Si Racha and Ko Si Chang. Si Racha, between Pattaya and Bangkok on Sukhumvit Road, gave its name to the chili sauce, nam prik si racha, and has a Japanese and Korean community thanks to the nearby industrial estates. From Ko Loy pier, boats cross to Ko Si Chang hourly in about 40 minutes, with a fare Wikivoyage last listed at 50 baht. The island has the ruins of a 19th-century royal summer palace built for King Chulalongkorn, a cliffside Chinese shrine and three-wheeled tuk-tuks with oversized engines for about 60 baht an hour.
Bang Saen, further up the coast toward Bangkok, is the Thai answer to Pattaya. It was the country's first government beach resort, in 1943, and it belongs to students from Burapha University on weekdays and Thai families on weekends, with few foreigners. Take any Bangkok-bound bus, get off at Nong Mon market, and ride a 10 to 20 baht songthaew to the beach. In the other direction, Nong Nooch in Sattahip is a 500-acre botanical garden, open since 1980, with a serious cycad collection hidden among the dinosaur statues.
The Part Most Guides Miss
The Naklua end of the city is the part most guides wave past, and it's the best part to wake up in. It's the old fishing settlement on the bay north of the Dolphin Roundabout, with quieter beaches at Wong Amat and Wong Phra Chan, the Lan Pho seafood market, and the Sanctuary of Truth on the point at Laem Ratchawet. Baht buses run to the Bay in a few minutes for 15 to 20 baht, so Walking Street stays an option without being outside your window. Wikivoyage notes that Naklua is popular with German-speaking visitors, and it keeps quieter hours than the Bay.
Where to Base Yourself
Jomtien. The default for families, couples and long stays. The beach runs about 5 kilometers, the water rates better than the Bay's, guesthouses start around 550 baht on Wikivoyage, and the airport bus has its own Jomtien terminal. The catch is distance: Jomtien Beach Road's songthaews don't always run to the far end at Na Jomtien, and getting into the Bay at night means the hill road over Pratumnak. Dongtan Beach, at the north end, has a section that's been the city's gay beach for years.
Naklua and Wong Amat. For travelers who want quiet and want the Sanctuary of Truth and the seafood market on foot. Wikivoyage rates the beaches here as quieter and generally cleaner than central Pattaya's. The catch is that you'll ride a baht bus into the Bay for most restaurants and nightlife, and not every songthaew at the Dolphin Roundabout continues north, so you may have to change there or walk.
Central Pattaya and Soi Buakhao. For budget travelers and people who came for the nightlife. Everything is a short baht bus ride, Hostelworld's top-rated hostels, Happy Hostel and Nonze, are here, and Soi Buakhao, between Second and Third roads, is lined with cheap guesthouses that long-stayers book directly. The catch is noise and the scene. Cheap rooms often sit above bars or massage shops, many allow smoking, and you'll walk past the beer bars every night.
Pratumnak Hill. For people with a scooter or a Bolt habit who want a view. The headland between the Bay and Jomtien has small coves, condo towers and the Buddha Hill temples, and it's quieter than either neighbor. The catch is that Wikivoyage notes there's no regular songthaew, and the roads up the hill are steep.
Realities to Be Aware Of
Daily budgets in Pattaya land close to Nomadic Matt's 2026 Thailand figures: about 1,750 baht (US$52) for a backpacker in a dorm eating street food, 3,100 baht ($92) mid-range with an air-conditioned room and some Western meals, and 6,000 baht ($179) and up for comfort. You can go under the backpacker number here more easily than on the islands, because the bus from Bangkok, the baht bus and the Ko Lan ferry are so cheap. The attractions are where it adds up: 500 baht for the Sanctuary of Truth, Nong Nooch's entry, and cabaret tickets on top. For long stays, a British YouTuber who runs a bar in town told BirminghamLive, as the Thaiger reported in September 2026, figures that add up to about 32,000 baht a month on a three-bedroom house, utilities and groceries.
Hassle is the price of the place. Watch for jet-ski damage claims, and bars with no fixed sign or dim interiors that hand you a fake bill. In September 2026 two tourists reported being steered by a friendly stranger into a shop selling coconut oil as hair-growth herbs, one paying 3,300 baht. On September 15, two men on a motorbike cut a British tourist with a sharp weapon at 01:36 in Jomtien while trying to grab his phone. Keep the phone away from the curb, keep the passport in the safe, and call the Tourist Police on 1155.
The road is the most dangerous part of a visit. Wikivoyage names the Dolphin Roundabout and the Beach Road junctions with Central Pattaya Road and South Pattaya Road as the worst black spots, with most crashes involving motorbikes late at night. The UK government says many rental scooters are unregistered, helmets are compulsory, and riding without the right license can void your insurance. In the water, stay inside the boomed swimming areas, because jet skis and speedboats do hit swimmers.
Know the national rules that catch visitors here. Vapes and e-cigarettes are illegal to own, with fines of 5,000 to 30,000 baht, and cannabis is medical-only with a Thai prescription. The UK government warns about drink spiking and methanol in bootleg spirits, so watch your drink being poured. Thailand legalized same-sex marriage in January 2025, and Pattaya has a long-established gay scene around Boyz Town on Pattayaland Soi 3.

If Pattaya Is Part of a Longer Trip
Pattaya is the first stop east of Bangkok, and the Gulf coast continues from here. Minibuses sold by Pattaya travel agents reach Ban Phe, the pier for Ko Samet, in about 90 minutes. Ferries cross in 30 to 45 minutes for 50 baht each way, and the national park charges foreign adults 200 baht. Laem Ngop, the jumping-off point for Ko Chang, is about three hours by minibus. For the west side of the Gulf, Roong Reuang runs one bus a day from Pattaya to Hua Hin at 15:30 for 526 baht, about five hours around the top of the Gulf.
For longer routes, think of Pattaya as a satellite of Suvarnabhumi rather than a hub of its own. The airport bus makes it an easy first or last night of a Southeast Asia trip, and U-Tapao's Bangkok Airways flights to Phuket and Ko Samui save backtracking to Bangkok for the south. Nakhonchai Air runs buses to Chiang Mai, about 11 hours. With the Cambodian land border closed, reach Siem Reap or Phnom Penh by air from Bangkok. If Pattaya is one stop on a bigger loop, AirTreks can route a multi-stop ticket that starts and ends at Suvarnabhumi and works in the Gulf on the way.
Yearly Things to Consider
Heat doesn't drive Pattaya's seasons, since average highs only move between 86°F in December and 91°F in April. Rain and northern winters do. The dry, slightly cooler months from November to February bring the high season and the highest room rates, peaking over Christmas and New Year, when many hotels add compulsory gala dinners. The big events are Wan Lai, Pattaya's late Songkran water fight, held on Beach Road on April 19 in 2026, and the International Fireworks Festival over Pattaya Beach, which ran November 28 and 29 in 2025.
The counterintuitive month is May or June. The rain has started, but at about 5 inches a month it's half what autumn brings, rooms are at low-season prices, and the town is quieter. Avoid September and October if beaches are the point. They're the wettest months at 8.4 and 8.8 inches, flash floods hit the city's roads, and runoff can turn the sea around Ko Lan green.
Pattaya month by month
| Month | Temp | Rainfall | Season | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 87°F (31°C) | 0.6 in | High | Dry and breezy. High-season room rates. |
| February | 88°F (31°C) | 0.8 in | High | Still dry. Busy, but room rates start easing. |
| March | 90°F (32°C) | 1.9 in | Shoulder | Heat builds. Some hotels keep high-season prices through March. |
| April | 91°F (33°C) | 2.7 in | Shoulder | Hottest month. Songkran, then Pattaya's own Wan Lai on April 19. Book buses early. |
| May | 91°F (33°C) | 4.8 in | Low | Rains begin. Low-season room rates. |
| June | 90°F (32°C) | 5.2 in | Low | Showery, hot and quiet. Good value. |
| July | 89°F (32°C) | 4.1 in | Low | Mid wet season. Quiet, cheap rooms, plankton blooms possible. |
| August | 89°F (31°C) | 3.6 in | Low | Least rain of the wet months. Cheap rooms. |
| September | 88°F (31°C) | 8.4 in | Low | Heavy rain. Low-lying roads can flood. |
| October | 88°F (31°C) | 8.8 in | Low | Wettest month. Beach days are a gamble. |
| November | 87°F (31°C) | 2.2 in | Shoulder | Dry season returns. Fireworks festival late in the month, rates rising. |
| December | 86°F (30°C) | 0.5 in | High | Best weather, highest prices. Gala-dinner surcharges at Christmas and New Year. |
Ideas for Itineraries
3 Days in Pattaya
Take the 06:55 train or a morning bus from Ekkamai and check into Jomtien or Naklua. Spend the afternoon on Pratumnak Hill for the view over the Bay, and eat in Jomtien. On day two, catch an early ferry from Bali Hai Pier to Ko Lan, ride a songthaew to Samae or Tien beach, and come back on a late-afternoon boat for a walk up Walking Street once the road closes to traffic at 18:00. Day three is the Sanctuary of Truth at 08:00, lunch at Lan Pho Naklua, and the bus back to Bangkok.
5 Days in Pattaya
Do the three-day plan, then add the coast. Day four is Si Racha and Ko Si Chang: a bus up Sukhumvit Road, the 40-minute boat from Ko Loy pier, and a tuk-tuk around the palace ruins and the cliff shrine, back by dark. On day five, go south to Nong Nooch in the morning, before the heat, and spend the afternoon on Jomtien beach, or catch the Tiffany's cabaret at 19:30. If you're heading on to an island, leave on day five instead by minibus to Ban Phe for Ko Samet.
1 Week in Pattaya
A week lets Pattaya be a base instead of a destination. Split it, three nights in Naklua and four in Jomtien, so you see both ends without daily cross-town rides. Fit in Ko Lan twice, once on a weekday, a day in Bang Saen on a weekend to see where Thai families go, and an overnight on Ko Samet, with the bus back via Ban Phe. Save one evening for the beer bars and Walking Street, if that's your thing, and one for a seafood dinner at Pupen at the far end of Jomtien.
2 Weeks or More in Pattaya
Two weeks or more and you're joining Pattaya's long-stay crowd. Jomtien and Soi Buakhao are where it rents. Wikivoyage notes that many cheap guesthouses don't appear on booking sites, so walk the soi and ask for a monthly rate, and the Thaiger's September 2026 profile of a British bar owner put a three-bedroom house at 25,000 baht a month. Use the time for weekend trips to Ko Chang via Laem Ngop or Ko Samet. Remember the 30-day visa-free limit if you plan to stretch past a month.

Pattaya Travel FAQ
Yes, if you stay in Jomtien and skip the Bay at night. Jomtien's long beach, Pattaya Park, the Underwater World aquarium and Nong Nooch are all aimed at families, and Wikivoyage calls Tiffany's cabaret family-friendly. What you can't do is walk kids down Walking Street or the sois off Second Road after dark without explaining things.
Pattaya if you want cheap transport and a day on a real island, since the 144-baht bus runs hourly and Ko Lan is 30 minutes offshore. Hua Hin if you want a quieter town that doesn't revolve around nightlife. They're about five hours apart by Roong Reuang's daily bus, so doing both on one trip is easy.
Yes. Roong Reuang runs hourly from 06:00 to 22:00 from Level 1, Gate 8, to its Jomtien bus station on Jomtien Second Road for 158 baht, in about two hours. The 22:00 bus ends at the North Pattaya station instead, so take an earlier one if you're staying in Jomtien.
It's one of the most open cities in Asia for it. Boyz Town on Pattayaland Soi 3 and the bars on Pattayaland Soi 1 have been the center of the scene for decades, and Dongtan Beach in north Jomtien has a gay section about 265 meters long. Thailand legalized same-sex marriage in January 2025.
Yes, and it's the best way to see it, because the day-trippers leave on the last ferry at 18:00. Wikivoyage lists places from about $35 a night to 3,000 baht (about $90) at weekends. Scooters rent for about 300 baht a day, and the shared songthaews between Na Ban pier and the beaches cost 20 to 30 baht.
In theory foreigners should carry it, but the Pattaya Tourist Police say a good photocopy of the photo page, visa and entry stamp is acceptable in practice. Leave the real one in the hotel safe, and never hand it over as a deposit for a scooter or a jet ski.
