BootsnAll Scorecard
5.4 / 10
Lusaka scores well on timing and badly on getting around. It is rarely crowded and dry for half the year, but nearly everything a visitor wants sits a car ride apart, and the city's real draw is the wild country beyond it.
- Value
- 6
- Above the 5 anchor on beds, with Hostelworld dorms at US$8 to $12, but parks charge US$25 a day, a Chaminuka day visit costs K1,500 and safari lodges price in dollars, so the cheap city and the costly bush cancel out.
- Getting around
- 3.5
- Between the 2 and 5 anchors, since the airport is 27 km out with no train, minibus routes are unmarked, taxis have no meters and nobody advises walking after dark, and Yango is what lifts it off the floor.
- Crowds and timing
- 7.5
- Near the 8 anchor, because the city is never tourist-crowded and gets almost no rain from May to October, but December and January each bring over 7 inches and many Lower Zambezi lodges close outside April to November.
- Safety and hassle
- 5
- On the 5 anchor, with Canada's September 2026 advice flagging theft, carjacking at traffic choke points and spiked drinks in Lusaka bars, while touts are few and daytime hassle is low.
- Food and drink
- 5
- Right at the 5 anchor, with nshima, ifisashi and kapenta cheap and filling at markets and canteens, while good restaurants cluster in suburbs you reach by car.
- Indie fit
- 5.5
- Just above 5, because buses, Proflight and the Chipata minibus put both great parks within reach on your own, yet inside them most stays are packaged lodge rates, and the city itself is easier to meet with a local contact than a map.
Editorial scores, 1 to 10, against the same written anchors for every city. Half points allowed. The overall is the plain average of the six.
Overview and Things to Consider
Lusaka grew out of a railway siding and never really decided to be a tourist city. The 2022 census counted about 2.2 million people, up from 1.7 million in 2010, spread over a plateau at 4,196 feet. That altitude is why July nights drop to 47°F (8°C) in a part of Zambia most people imagine as hot. The old center is Cairo Road, 1.8 kilometers of dual carriageway lined with banks and wholesalers, but daily life has drifted east to the malls on the Great East Road: Manda Hill, Arcades and East Park. Most visitors give it one night, between a long-haul flight and a light aircraft to the bush.
You'll like Lusaka if you're curious about how an African capital runs when it isn't performing for anyone, if you want a place to sort logistics, buy a SIM and stock up before a safari, or if you have a friend or a work reason to be here. You'll hate it if you want a walkable old quarter, a row of sights, or a bar street you can stroll after dark. There isn't one, and the UK Foreign Office advises against walking at night.
The 2026 story is power. In late 2024 the drought that drained Lake Kariba left homes on roughly seven hours of grid electricity a day, and a November 2024 blackout trapped miners underground on the Copperbelt. By July 2026 Kariba held 47 percent live storage, double the year before, and ZESCO said in June it doesn't expect nationwide load management to return. Politics moved too. Hakainde Hichilema won a second term in the August 13, 2026 election with 60.49 percent, though a joint security operation in Kabulonga on election night left a former minister dead.
Two days is the right dose for most people. Spend one on Embassy Park, the National Museum and Soweto Market, and the other on Lusaka National Park and the elephant orphans. The malls that some lists treat as attractions are just malls, useful for an ATM and a coffee, not worth a morning.
How Lusaka Got Here
Lusaka began in 1905 as a water stop on the railway the British South Africa Company was building to link the Copperbelt mines with Cape Town, and took its name from Chief Lusaaka, head of a nearby Lenje village. Its spine, Cairo Road, was named for Cecil Rhodes' dream of a Cape to Cairo route through British territory, and the line still runs a block from it. In 1929 the colonial government decided to move the capital of Northern Rhodesia away from Livingstone, hired the town planner Stanley Adshead, and Lusaka formally became the capital in May 1935, with a Lusaka Week timed to King George V's silver jubilee.
Independence in 1964 made it the capital of Zambia and set off a building program: government offices, the University of Zambia and a new airport that opened in 1967 and was renamed for Kenneth Kaunda in 2011. The planned garden suburbs, Woodlands, Ibex Hill and Rhodes Park, still hold the money, while much of the city lives in townships and unplanned settlements on the western and southern fringes that grew faster than any plan. That split explains why a visitor's Lusaka is so spread out.
The clearest place to read the country's story is Embassy Park on Independence Avenue, a national monument since 2009. Five presidents lie there: Levy Mwanawasa, Frederick Chiluba, Michael Sata, Rupiah Banda, buried in March 2022, and Kaunda, buried in July 2021 under the motto One Zambia One Nation. Edgar Lungu, who died in June 2025, is missing, after his family announced a burial in South Africa following a dispute with the government.
Getting There and Around
Kenneth Kaunda International (LUN) sits 27 km northeast of the business district, according to Zambia Airports Corporation. Its Chinese-financed Terminal 2 opened on August 5, 2021 and handles all international flights, while the old Terminal 1 handles domestic ones. Long-haul options run through Dubai on Emirates, Doha on Qatar Airways, Addis Ababa on Ethiopian and Nairobi on Kenya Airways. The airport handled 1.79 million passengers in 2025. FlySafair says it will start flying from Johannesburg on February 1, 2027, five times a week.
No train serves the airport. Taxis wait outside the terminal at airport prices. Wikivoyage contributors describe a cheaper ride of about K100 from the fuel station across the car park, and Yango works for the trip too. Many guesthouses and lodges send a driver if you ask when booking, which is the sensible choice for a night arrival.
Entry got easier. From November 2, 2022, under Statutory Instrument 69 of 2022, citizens of the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the EU stopped needing a visa, and on January 1, 2025 Zambia's Department of Immigration added 53 more countries, for 167 in all. Arriving by air, you need a return or onward ticket. The UK allows tourists 90 days in any 12 months, Canada warns officers may stamp only 30, and passports need six months' validity and at least two blank pages (Canada says three). Proof of yellow fever vaccination is only demanded if you arrive from a country with transmission.
Inside the city, minibuses cost around US$0.50 a ride and leave from four central terminals, Kulima Tower, City Market, Millennium and Lumumba, but routes aren't posted, so ask the conductor. Street taxis are sky-blue or light-gray Toyota Corollas with no meters, and Wikivoyage puts a fair short ride at about US$2 agreed before you get in. Yango runs in Lusaka, Kitwe, Ndola and Solwezi, and the travel portal ZambiaTourism.com also lists the local app Ulendo. Uber isn't widely used. Walking in daylight is fine for short hops, with an eye on uncovered drains, and after dark it isn't.
Long-distance coaches leave from the Inter-City Bus Terminus on Dedan Kimathi Road, where you buy tickets in person, and Wikivoyage says Power Tools, Juldan Motors and UBZ are the lines locals and expats trust most. Proflight Zambia flies from Lusaka to Mfuwe, Livingstone, Ndola, Solwezi, Kasama and Mansa.
What's Changed Since 2016
The visa waivers came in November 2022 and January 2025. Before November 2, 2022, a US or British traveler needed a visa. Now 167 nationalities walk through, and the US$50 KAZA UniVisa matters mainly if you also want to cross into Zimbabwe and back.
In August 2021 the new international terminal at Kenneth Kaunda International, built under a 2015 to 2020 upgrade financed by China's Exim Bank, took over all international traffic. It has six gates, while the old terminal, now domestic only, has no jet bridges. By 2025 Lusaka handled 71 percent of all airport passengers in Zambia.
The blackouts came and went between 2024 and 2026. The 2023-24 drought cut Kariba's output so hard that in late 2024 ZESCO's target for households was about seven hours of power a day, and a nationwide blackout on November 24, 2024 knocked even that back to three to five hours. In a statement reported on June 10, 2026, ZESCO's managing director said the country isn't expected to return to nationwide load management. Kariba stood at 47.47 percent live storage on July 21, 2026, against 23.90 percent a year earlier. Short local outages still happen, so a guesthouse with solar or a generator is still the safer pick.
A cholera outbreak that began in the east in January 2023 reached Lusaka in October 2023 and lasted until July 2024. The 60,000-seat National Heroes Stadium became a treatment center, schools stayed shut into February 2024, and a vaccination drive with 1.4 million WHO-supplied doses began on January 16, 2024. The CDC still describes active cholera transmission as widespread in Zambia, so the food and water rules below aren't a formality.
Roads have changed most since 2020. The Lusaka West Ring Road opened in 2020 to pull trucks out of the center, and the Lusaka to Ndola dual carriageway was 78 percent complete in June 2026, with the Kapiri Mposhi bypass open and the Kabwe bypass following in September 2026. A new toll plaza opened between Chibombo and Kabwe in May 2026. Drivers heading north should carry cash for the tolls.
What the Usual Advice Gets Wrong
"Get your visa on arrival, or buy the KAZA UniVisa to save money." US, UK, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and EU passports have needed no Zambian visa since November 2, 2022, and 53 more nationalities joined on January 1, 2025. The US$50 KAZA UniVisa, valid 30 days for Zambia and Zimbabwe, only earns its price if you plan to cross to the Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls and come back.
"Plan around load-shedding. Lusaka has power only a few hours a day." That was true in 2024. In June 2026 ZESCO said it expects no return to nationwide load management, with Kariba holding twice the water it did in July 2025. Local faults still knock power out for hours, but you no longer need to plan every phone charge.
"Victoria Falls is an easy day trip from Lusaka." Livingstone is about 480 km away by road, and Wikivoyage puts the bus at 7 to 9 hours each way. The passenger train runs only once a week and is slower still. Either fly Proflight, which runs several flights a day, or give Livingstone at least two nights. And if you go in October, ZambiaTourism.com calls it the worst month for the Falls, with bare rock showing on the Zambian side.
"Go see the elephant orphans at the Lilayi nursery." Game Rangers International now shows visitors its rescued calves at the Wildlife Discovery Centre inside Lusaka National Park, on the city's southeastern edge,. The center opens 09:00 to 15:00, elephant viewing runs 11:45 to 13:00 daily, and entry is US$15 for international adults.
"Pay in dollars, everyone takes them." The kwacha is the only legal tender, and payments are supposed to be made in it. Lodges and tourist businesses often accept US dollars but give change in kwacha at their own rate. Use an ATM from a major bank, or Airtel Money or MTN Mobile Money if you have a local SIM, and skip the street changers.
Ideas to Consider for Your Visit
Have you thought about starting at Embassy Park? The presidential burial ground on Independence Avenue shows how Zambia remembers its leaders: Mwanawasa's mausoleum is shaped like a traditional stool of authority, Chiluba's carries a cross for his 1991 declaration of a Christian nation, and Sata's echoes Solomon's Temple. The Lusaka National Museum on the same avenue opened in October 1996, with archaeology and history downstairs and contemporary Zambian painting and sculpture upstairs. Wikivoyage lists it open daily 09:00 to 16:30 for K131. Look for the Freedom Statue nearby, a man breaking his chains.
Eat the national meal at least once a day. Nshima, a stiff maize porridge, comes with relishes you pinch up by hand: ifisashi, greens stewed in groundnut sauce, and kapenta, small dried sardines from Lake Tanganyika that now live in Zambia's lakes too. Soweto Market on Lumumba Road opens 06:30 to 17:30 and has a covered front with a huge traditional market behind it. Go in the morning, carry little, and ask a local to come along if you can.
Spend a morning in Lusaka National Park, Zambia's 20th national park, opened in June 2015 on the city's southeastern edge. White rhino, giraffe, zebra, eland and sable live here, and you can walk, cycle or drive. Time it so you're at the Wildlife Discovery Centre when the orphaned calves come in between 11:45 and 13:00, then have lunch at the Bush Café on site.
Look at art made here, not imported. The Henry Tayali Visual Arts Centre at the Showgrounds shows and sells local work and opens Monday to Saturday 08:00 to 17:00. On Sundays the car parks at Arcades fill with the Sunday Market's crafts, clothes and plants, and the curio sellers at Kabwata Cultural Village on Burma Road work every day.
For a day out of town, Chaminuka sits on a 10,000-acre reserve in Chongwe, a 45-minute drive from Lusaka and a short one from the airport, and holds what it calls the largest private collection of African art in Zambia, around 1,000 works. A day visit with buffet lunch costs K1,500. It's a good final day if your flight leaves in the evening, since the airport is on the way back.
The bigger idea is to use Lusaka as the launchpad it is. The Lower Zambezi, 4,092 km² of river country facing Zimbabwe's Mana Pools, starts beyond Chirundu, about 135 km by road, and its lodges pick up from Lusaka or fly guests to the Royal and Jeki airstrips. Canoeing past elephants on the channels is the activity to book. South Luangwa, where leopard density is among the highest in the world, is a short Proflight hop to Mfuwe or a long day east on the Great East Road.
The Part Most Guides Miss
The thing most guides skip is that Lusaka has its own rhinos. Lusaka National Park, on the city's southeastern edge, holds white rhino along with giraffe and sable, and you can walk or cycle its trails, which you can't do in most big-game parks. Pair it with the elephant orphans at the Wildlife Discovery Centre and you get a real wildlife morning for US$15, the park fee and a ride, before you've spent a dollar on a safari flight. For someone on a tight budget who can't afford the Luangwa, it's the best morning in the city.
Where to Base Yourself
Fairview, near the center. The pick for independent travelers who want to be near Cairo Road, the museum and the bus terminus. Lusaka Backpackers at 161 Mulombwa Close is about 0.6 km from the center, with a pool, bar and kitchen and dorms from about US$12 on Hostelworld. The catch is that it takes cash or bank transfer only, guests rate the location 7 out of 10, and being close doesn't make the walk home safe after dark.
Kalundu and the Great East Road. Best for a short stopover. Natwange Backpackers on Kariba Road in Kalundu is a few minutes' walk from the East Park and Arcades malls and about 20 minutes from the airport, takes cards, and has a pool. You get food, ATMs, the Sunday Market and an easy airport run. The catch is that this is mall country, and you'll see more of Lusaka's car parks than its neighborhoods.
Roma. For a quieter, residential stay. Panyumba Backpackers on Pendela Road, 4.3 km from the center, scores 9.7 on Hostelworld for its garden and staff, with dorms from about US$8, including female-only rooms. The catch is distance, since everything is a Yango ride away, and it takes payment in cash on arrival.
Realities to Be Aware Of
Money first. Wikivoyage's Zambia page puts a bare-bones budget at a minimum of US$25 a day and all-inclusive safari lodges or five-star hotels at US$250 and up, and says the middle ground is hard to find. Lusaka itself sits at the cheap end, with dorms from US$8, but a park day adds US$25 a person in fees before you count the lodge. The kwacha is the legal tender. Major banks' ATMs take Visa and Mastercard, mobile money is everywhere, you must declare more than US$5,000 on arrival, and ZambiaTourism.com warns against changing money on the street.
Safety in Lusaka is about daylight and transport. Canada's advice, updated September 9, 2026, flags common theft, armed robbery, carjackings at traffic choke points and spiked food and drinks in bars and nightclubs. The UK says to pre-arrange transport and not walk at night,. Keep phones out of car windows at junctions. It's illegal to photograph government buildings and army sites, and the UK says you could be arrested for it, so keep the camera down near State House and anything in uniform.
Health takes some prep. The CDC recommends malaria tablets for Zambia, Lusaka included, and says yellow fever vaccine isn't recommended for Lusaka. It also reports active cholera transmission across the country, so drink bottled or boiled water and eat food served hot. The CDC lists hepatitis A, typhoid and rabies shots as worth discussing with your doctor.
Norms. Tipping isn't required, but restaurants often add a 10 percent service charge or expect the equivalent. Same-sex relations are illegal, with sentences up to life imprisonment, and Canada warns LGBTQ+ travelers of harassment and violence, so public affection is a risk for anyone. Ask before you photograph people. Crowds never really build in the city itself. Even in peak safari months it stays a business and government town, and the queues you'll meet are at banks and the airport.

If Lusaka Is Part of a Longer Trip
Victoria Falls is the obvious next stop. Livingstone is about 480 km by road, first 55 km down the T2 to the Kafue junction and then the T1 the rest of the way. Wikivoyage reports coaches taking 7 to 9 hours and rates Power Tools as the most reliable operator, and it lists the passenger train as weekly and about 12 hours. Proflight flies the route several times a day. From Livingstone it's 10 km to the Falls and the border, and the Zimbabwe side is covered in our Victoria Falls guide. The Falls are fullest in February and March, clearest from April to July, and lowest in October.
East is safari country. The Great East Road runs to Chipata, the last town before the Malawi border. Wikivoyage says buses take about 7 hours to Chipata, with Johabie among the fixed-schedule operators, and a PPDAZ minibus leaves Chipata at 14:00 for Mfuwe, 3 to 3.5 hours, for K150 in 2024. From Mfuwe the South Luangwa gate is close and the budget camps along the river take campers. Most people fly to Mfuwe on Proflight and drive back out, or the reverse.
North, the TAZARA railway leaves from New Kapiri Mposhi, about 162 km north of Lusaka, for Dar es Salaam. Passenger trains came back on February 10, 2026 after an 18-week suspension, one a week each way, leaving Kapiri Mposhi on Tuesdays. Check before you commit, since service has stopped before, and the Chinese concession signed on September 29, 2025 to rebuild the line covers freight, with the first construction breaking ground in July 2026. South, Chirundu is the crossing into Zimbabwe over the Zambezi, past the Lower Zambezi turnoff.
For a longer route, Lusaka slots in well as an open jaw: fly into Lusaka, travel overland to Livingstone, and fly out of Livingstone or Johannesburg, or carry on north to Tanzania by rail. AirTreks builds that kind of multi-stop ticket, which saves the backtracking a simple return forces on you.
Yearly Things to Consider
Two seasons rule. Rain falls from November to March, with 7.6 inches in December and 7.4 in January, and almost none from May to October, with no measurable rain in June or July. The dry months are when the parks work, since game gathers at the rivers from July to October and most Lower Zambezi lodges open only from April to November. The heat peaks just before the rains, with average highs of 87°F (31°C) in September and 86°F (30°C) in November.
The counterintuitive months are June and July. They're the coolest in Lusaka, with highs of 77°F (25°C) and 75°F (24°C) and nights in the upper 40s°F, so pack a fleece for early game drives. They also catch the Falls between the flood spray of February and March and the low water of October, with good game as the bush thins. The rains carry a hidden cost too, since a poor season drains Kariba, and the power cuts of 2024 were the bill for the drought that came before them.
Lusaka month by month
| Month | Temp | Rainfall | Season | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 82°F (28°C) | 7.4 in | Low | Wettest stretch, afternoon storms, many safari lodges closed. |
| February | 83°F (28°C) | 5.7 in | Low | Green and wet. Victoria Falls near full flood. |
| March | 81°F (27°C) | 3.4 in | Low | Rains tailing off, Falls still in flood, roads muddy. |
| April | 82°F (28°C) | 1.0 in | Shoulder | Lodges reopening, bush thick, Falls at their best. |
| May | 80°F (27°C) | 0.1 in | Shoulder | Dry season starts, cool nights, good value. |
| June | 77°F (25°C) | 0.0 in | High | Cold nights, around 48°F (9°C). Pack a fleece. |
| July | 75°F (24°C) | 0.0 in | High | Peak safari demand begins, lowest daytime highs. |
| August | 82°F (28°C) | 0.0 in | High | Dry and dusty, game concentrating at rivers. |
| September | 87°F (31°C) | 0.1 in | High | Hottest average highs, prime Luangwa game viewing. |
| October | 84°F (29°C) | 0.3 in | High | Hot, best game, Falls at their lowest. |
| November | 86°F (30°C) | 3.2 in | Shoulder | First storms, lodges begin closing. |
| December | 80°F (27°C) | 7.6 in | Low | Wettest month, holiday travel home, quiet parks. |
Ideas for Itineraries
3 Days in Lusaka
Day one, Independence Avenue on foot in daylight: Embassy Park, the Lusaka National Museum and the Freedom Statue, then the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross with its tall stained glass. Lunch on nshima and ifisashi, and an afternoon at the Henry Tayali Visual Arts Centre at the Showgrounds. Day two, Lusaka National Park by Yango or a hired driver, a walk or drive among the rhino and giraffe, and the elephant orphans at 11:45. Day three, Soweto Market early, Kabwata Cultural Village for carvings, and the Sunday Market at Arcades if it falls on a Sunday.
5 Days in Lusaka
Do the three days above, then drive about 135 km to Chirundu and on into the Lower Zambezi with a lodge transfer, or fly to the Royal or Jeki airstrips, for two nights of canoeing and game drives along the river opposite Mana Pools. Between April and November that's the best wildlife you can reach from the capital in a few hours. Outside those months, swap it for a night at Chaminuka in Chongwe, 45 minutes from the airport.
1 Week in Lusaka
Spend one night in Lusaka to recover from the long-haul flight, then fly Proflight to Mfuwe for four nights in South Luangwa, where leopards are the park's calling card. Fly back for two nights in Lusaka, giving one day to the national park and the elephant orphans and one to the museum, Embassy Park and Soweto Market. In July to October you'll pay high-season lodge rates but see the most game.
2 Weeks or More in Lusaka
Base in Fairview or Roma for the city days, and give the trip a loop. Start with three nights in Lusaka, then take the bus east to Chipata and the PPDAZ minibus to Mfuwe for four nights at a riverside budget camp at South Luangwa. Fly or bus back, spend a night in town, then bus 7 to 9 hours to Livingstone for three nights at the Falls, crossing to the Zimbabwe side on a KAZA UniVisa if you want both views. If you're staying longer for work or volunteering, Kalundu's malls cover groceries and banking, and Lusaka National Park and Chaminuka make easy weekends.

Lusaka Travel FAQ
It's about 480 km on the T2 and T1, so yes in daylight, but leave at dawn. The UK Foreign Office warns that driving outside towns after dark is dangerous because of abandoned vehicles, pedestrians and stray animals. Trunk roads are tolled, so carry kwacha in cash. The UK and Canada both say their licences are valid for up to 90 days, after which you need an international driving permit or a Zambian licence, and rental firms often want an IDP anyway.
The CDC says yes. It recommends prescription malaria prevention for travelers to Zambia, and Lusaka is within the transmission area, with the dangerous P. falciparum the main species. Start the course before you arrive, and use repellent at dusk, especially in the rainy months.
Barely. ZambiaTourism.com says Uber isn't widely used, and Yango is the app most visitors end up using, with Comfort-class cars and service in Lusaka, Kitwe, Ndola and Solwezi. The local app Ulendo runs in Lusaka and Kitwe. Agree the fare before getting into a street taxi, since they have no meters.
Only if you arrive from a country with yellow fever transmission, according to the UK Foreign Office. The CDC doesn't recommend the vaccine for Lusaka and says it isn't required for travelers flying direct from the United States.
